May 3, 2019 - Week 33

Hello Dale Street Families!

Wow - May 3rd!  We started off the month of May just like we finished off the month of April, with a lot of awesome activities at #beproudbedale.  Take a minute to check out some of the scenes and be sure to check out some of the upcoming dates at the bottom of the blog.

Our fifth grade classrooms visited the Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University this week.  Using the concept of simulation as an instructional tool, the Challenger Center program created an exciting, cooperative learning environment for students at Dale Street to better understand the challenges of teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and decision making.  Every crew member (student) was assigned to, and trained for, a specific role. They took their positions in either Mars Control or the Spacecraft and assumed control of an exciting two hour mission simulation to Mars.

Six students from Ms. Sager's class submitted entries in the Walking Classroom Illustration Contest. What an incredible feat that two students received honors! Yasmina was named a runner-up and received a $25 gift card to Amazon. Tarun was awarded an honorable mention for creating an innovative design. He won a Walking Classroom shirt. Well done!

When: Tuesday, May 7th 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Where: Dale Street Gymnasium
What: Awesome Student Art

Do you know how light travels?  If you ask the Grade 4 students in Ms. Isaacson's class they will be able to tell you.  This week they used flashlights and mirrors to explore how light travels.

#Makergym was one of the sessions that Mrs. Nawrocki and Ms. Laughna attended at Medfield's recent DLD professional day.  They decided this week to mix up their "create your own game" unit using the makergym idea.  In makergym, students are given a set of materials and they must come up with their own PE game using only the materials they are given.  It could be compared to the TV show "Chopped."  The students have really enjoyed it and have come up with some pretty creative and fun ideas!

All Dale Street students will be attending a production of “James and the Giant Peach” at the Wheelock Family Theatre on Wednesday, May 8.  Field trip buses are scheduled to depart immediately following morning announcements.  It will not be possible to wait for tardy students on this day.  We will return to school in time for regular dismissal.

All students will need to bring a snack and lunch to eat at the theater.  Please note that lunch bags do NOT need to be disposable, but glass items of any type are prohibited.

Mr. Mason's fifth grade class made the walk down the street today to participate in 'Book Buddies' with Mrs. Ravinski's first grade students.  It is so great to see the smiles on all of the students' faces!

The next Principal's Coffee will be held on Friday, May 10th, at 8:45 a.m. in the Dale Street School cafeteria.  We will be reviewing our Site Council survey results and discussing the 2019-2020 school budget along with new staff positions for the upcoming school year. Also, as requested in the Site Council survey, we will have an information session on the use of Google Classroom. Please RSVP if you are planning to attend.  Please note that if you are in need of child care, feel free to bring your little ones. We will be providing refreshments for this presentation.

As the weather turns warmer and you start making plans for BBQs, end of school year parties, and more, consider hosting an MCPE Entertainment for Education (E4E) event to help raise funds for our schools. Go to www.medfieldcoalition.org/e4e to find out more.

Please join SEPAC on Tuesday, May 21st at 7pm in the Blake Library to hear Karey Curley, Team Chair, and a panel of parents  discuss "Increasing Student Attendance and Input at IEP Meetings." Families of students of all ages are encouraged to attend. Elections will also take place at this meeting for the 2019-2020 SEPAC Board. If you are interested in a leadership role, please contact sepac@email.medfield.net. To learn more about us, please visit our website: https://sites.google.com/mail.medfield.k12.ma.us/sepac/

The Student Council met last Friday and voted to initiate “kindness mirrors” for the months of May and June.  The gist of it is….Each class will be given materials for “kindness mirrors” (either adhesive mirror squares or mirror paper and mirror markers). During the months of May & June each class records acts of kindness writing on the reflective mirrors.  The thought that “kindness reflects who we are (at Dale Street)” would be the message.  The students decided that these acts should be anonymous (unsigned-void of names). The mirror squares or mirror roll will be displayed as a collage in the halls.  It gives teachers and kids ways of positive thinking and “catching them when they’re good” kind of attitude.  Take a look next time you visit Dale St!
