March 29, 2018 - Week 29

Greetings Dale Street Community!

It was a wonderful week here at #beproudbedale this week.  Personally, I had the great privilege of hearing retired General Colin Powell this week at the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) conference in Boston. His comment, "The only thing I can focus on now is the future, and the future is our children" really resonated with me.  Coming to Dale Street every day to work with amazing students and staff is so inspiring and is truly an honor.  Take a peek at some of the great things from this week...

A very special thank you to Kelly Wysocki, Amanda Spears, all of the volunteers and all of the families who supported the Winter Carnival.  The Dale Street PTO will be receiving $16,500 from the Winter Carnival proceeds!  This is amazing and all of us at Dale Street are so very appreciative!

Last Friday our 4th graders had a fantastic time at the Kids' Night Out!  The Olympic themed night was filled with awesome games, great prizes, and fun music.  Special thanks to our fantastic PTO and all of the parent volunteers.

Students in Grade 5 were amazed by the various experiments when the Discovery Museum visited this week. Students participated in activities and discussions regarding the various states of matter and their phase changes.  Special thanks to our very generous PTO for funding this wonderful experience.

MCPE is currently accepting nominations for the Robert C. Maguire "Global Perspectives in Education" Award.  This award is given annually to a staff member who inspires students to look beyond the town of Medfield and expand their horizons.  Learning about the global community could include efforts in world history, politics, science, technology, literature, mathematics, economics, sociology, anthropology and more.  If your child has been enriched by such a teacher, please visit our website www.medfieldcoalition.org to complete the nomination form.  Deadline for submissions is April 27.

Registration for the grade 2-5 spelling bee opens on Monday April 2nd at 9am.  Have your children gather some friends and one parent will register teams of 3-4 students (2 person teams are allowed - see our website for details). This is always an exciting event for the kids and does sell out so please don't delay.  Visit our website to register www.medfieldcoalition.org

Robert C. Maguire Award

Thanks to Elizabeth in Ms. Condon's class for reading today's book recommendation. Elizabeth recommended Smile by Raina Telgemeier for "anyone who likes easy reads" and because "you feel like a character in the book."  Elizabeth rated this book 5 stars!  Thanks Elizabeth!

letter was sent out today offering parents the opportunity to share information about their son/daughter for next year’s placement at Dale Street.  The information that you share will be used to assist me with the student placement process for the 2018 – 2019 school year.  When corresponding about placement, parents are asked to focus on the type of learning environment that best meets the strengths and needs of their child.  Please know that throughout the placement process our focus will be on placing your child in a classroom in which they will grow both academically and socially.

Dear Medfield Public School Families,

I hope that you are all doing as well as possible, given the tough weather recently.  I sent out an email on November 8th, 2017 introducing INTERFACE Referral Services. Since that time, I have spoken with many parents who may not have seen that email, so I thought I would resend the information, in an effort to spread the word!

Medfield is excited to announce that the Medfield Public Schools and the town have contracted with INTERFACE Referral Services.  INTERFACE is a telephone helpline, staffed by clinicians at William James College, that will serve to eliminate obstacles for Medfield community members across the lifespan, as they seek mental health services.  INTERFACE is available for all residents of the town, regardless of age, and comes at no cost for individual families.

The INTERFACE Helpline is open and active Monday through Friday, from 9:00AM - 5:00PM.  Callers will work with a Resource and Referral Counselor who will help them navigate the challenges of finding mental health services.  Each caller will be assigned a lead counselor who will provide matches to services. The service will also help find a provider who accepts their insurance and is available for new patients.  A match will be located within no more than two weeks time. INTERFACE takes care to attempt, to the best of their ability, to match clients not only with a mental health professional, but one who specializes in the area of concern, within the geographic region desired. Please note that this is not an emergency psychiatric crisis center.  For emergency situations, please call Riverside Community Care Crisis Unit at 781-769-8674 or 800-529-5077.

For more information about the INTERFACE Referral Service, please visit the INTERFACE website.  I have provided links and websites that may be helpful as you become better acquainted with the process.  This information is also on the medfieldsel.com website, which has articles, resources, and information about all things SEL.

To access the INTERFACE Helpline, please call:

Monday - Friday, 9:00AM - 5:00PM

Sincerely,

Dave Worthley, Ed,D.

March 23, 2018 - Week 28

Hello Dale Street!

Well, it doesn't happen often, I think we stole one from Mother Nature this week.  That is a total win for #beproudbedale as it gave us a full 5 days to get more awesomeness in.  Check it out....
Thank you to all of the Dale Street parents and care givers who were able to attend Parent/Teacher conferences over the past two weeks.  The lines of communication between home and school must always remain open and strong.  If at any point during the remainder of the school year you feel that there is an area in your child’s education that needs to be addressed, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.  We strive to do our best to support the academic, social, and emotional development of your child(ren).

It was a wonderful day for two, amazing Dale Street students.  Colin and Nathan displayed true Olympic spirit at today's Special Olympics!  Congratulations to these wonderful students.  We are so proud of you!

Tarun (in Ms. MacDonald's fourth grade classroom) represented Dale Street wonderfully in the “Get Real Foods” contest at the Unlikely Book Store, last Monday night.  Although we did not win the grand prize of having Jeff Kinney visit our school, Tarun had the pleasure of meeting Jeff and received autographed books!

On April 6th, 2018 at 7pm the Class of 2019 Student Government will be hosting the hypnotist show right here in the Medfield High School Auditorium! Tickets are $10 per person. Come for some laughs, concessions, and fun!

Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade class took a "field trip" to the Dale Street makerspace. Check out the creativity & authenticity of these TALENTED children!

Save the date! Registration opens for the annual MCPE Spelling Bee on April 2nd.  Gather your teams of 3-4 players and may be the best team win.  The Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday May 1st at Medfield High School at 4pm.  See our website www.medfieldcoalition.org for more information and to register on or after 4/2.
This event will sell out!  See you at the bee.

Today, students in Mrs. Lowerre's fifth grade class took time to dive deeper into volume.  These talented learners accepted the challenge to create as many rectangular prisms as they could with 24 centimeter cubes.  Once that was complete, take a picture of their creations, upload them in Pic Collage and create a mathematical equation.  So fun!

We are down to 16 teams in our first annual March Madness Free Throw contest.  It has been so much fun.  The bad news....Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Infantino, and I have been knocked out.  The next round (the final 16) will take place on Tuesday (3/27) and Thursday (3/29).  Shots can be taken between 7:30 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.  All shots have to be completed by the end of the day on Thursday (3/29).  Thank you to everyone who signed up for this fun activity and best of luck to all the teams still alive.

Check out the PTO update with information about the following events and more!
