September 30, 2016 - Week 5

Dear Dale Street Families,

Another great week here at Dale Street!  Please take a minute to scroll through and check out some highlights from this week and catch up on some important reminders.

There is no school on Monday, October 3rd
in observance of Rosh Hashanah.

This week students in Ms. DiPesa's fourth grade class participated in an author Skype with Nora Raleigh Baskin.  Ms. Baskin is the author of Nine, Ten, a book Ms. DiPesa's class is using as their first read aloud. What a great opportunity for these students!

Congratulations to our Positive Referrals this week.  Thank you for making our school such a great place!   We are very proud of you!

Vision Screening will take place next week (10/5-10/7) during Physical Education classes. Please remind students who have glasses to bring them to the screening. If you do not want to have your child participate in the screening, please notify the nurse by sending in a note or by email

Today, students in Ms. Sager's fifth grade classroom participated in student-led inquiry and discovery using Explain Everything.  #amazingstudents

Congratulations to the students who were selected to serve on this year's Student Advisory Council as well as our Student Advisory Council alternates.  Thank you to all the boys and girls who submitted a letter of interest.  Although some students may not have been selected to serve on this year's council, we hope they will be active leaders bringing about creative ideas in their classrooms.

Special thanks to our wonderful PTO for providing all students and staff with these awesome welcome back wristbands!
Congratulations to Katie in Mrs. Crable's class for winning the MCPE Fall Ball Art Contest! Katie received a beautiful gift basket full of art supplies for her poster design.

All students in grade 4 and grade 5 General Music are required to bring a recorder to every music session this year.  You may have already received a hard copy of the notice from you child.  Please send this notice back into school with your child if you have not already done so.  Your child will be learning to read music and improvise using this simple instrument.

Looking forward to making great music in General Music this year!

To gain a better understanding of adding and subtracting decimals, students in Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade classroom used student-created menus to budget their breakfast, lunch and dinner choices for a day.  One student's comment, "Wow, Ms. Bertschmann!  You tricked us into adding and subtracting decimals!"  Very cool!

Thank you for reading and best wishes for a terrific long weekend.

Respectfully,
Steve

September 23, 2016 - Week 4

Greetings Dale Street Families,

What a great week! It's hard to believe, but almost a month of school is already behind us. This week's blog is filled with school activities and includes some important reminders. Please enjoy.

On a visit to Mrs. Foley's fifth grade classroom today, students were involved in an inquiry based sun tracking activity.  It was great to listen to students' discussions about the size of shadows in comparison to the location of the sun in the sky.  #collaborativescientists

We have started something new here at Dale Street this year.  Each Friday a student has an opportunity to read a book recommendation during morning announcements.  Shea, from Ms. Walunas' class, was our first student to share a book recommendation.  He did an awesome job!

Mrs. Cowell and Mrs. Fromen worked with both grade levels this week in the LMC.  Grade 4 students set up Medfield Google accounts which will follow them through high school (no email until 6th grade). These students also went through a Common Sense Media lesson on passwords & privacy before getting to choose a password that fit criteria for creating a strong password.
Grade 5 students reviewed password/privacy Common Sense Media lessons, received refreshers on Google account information and expectations. These students also discussed digital citizenship.

Thank you to all of our students and staff who participated in today's Patriots Spirit Day. Let's hope it brings the team some luck on Sunday!

Students in Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade used the beautiful weather this week to complete shadow investigations in science.  Cool learning!
