December 23, 2016 - Week 17

Happy Friday Dale Street Families,

What an exciting week!  Take a minute to check out some of the awesome things that took place at Dale Street this week.

We had our Final Competition for the 2016-2017 Geo Bee on Thursday morning.  All 17 contestants did a remarkable job!  Congratulations to all of you for making the final round.

Congratulations to Carl from Mr. Douglas' class for winning this year's Geo Bee. Carl will now take an online exam with a chance to join the state competition, eventually the national competition and a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship and a trip sponsored by National Geographic!

Mrs. Crable's class participated in number talks this week.

The Holiday Mall and the Holiday Flea Market were incredible successes this week at the Dale Street School. These events both benefit the Medfield Home Committee.  I am honored to report that these two events raised $2,648!  Wow!  Thank you to all of the students, families, and staff who supported this wonderful cause.

Congratulations to our raffle winners!

Congratulations and great job to the Dale Street Bands!  On Monday, the fourth and fifth grades bands performed for their family and guests.  The music was fantastic and all of the attendees enjoyed the performance.  Thank you to Mr. Dexter and Mr. Murphy for their outstanding leadership.

This week students in Ms. Condon's and Ms. Curran's/Hacker's classes read the story "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" (about the true story of the Candy Bomber, Lt. Halvorsen who began "Operation Vittles" - dropping candy to kids living in West Berlin during the Berlin Airlift).

Students made their our own candy parachutes and reenacted the Candy Drop.
What a cool activity!

Great excitement in Ms. Isaacson's fourth grade class as they received their first pen pal letters this week.

Congratulations to Dale Street Library/Media Specialist, Mrs. Kerry Cowell for becoming Medfield's first teacher to be Level 1 Google Certified!  We are very proud of you!
Happy Holidays from the Dale Street School! We hope that you enjoy some time with your family and friends during the break from school.  There will be no school for students on Monday, December 26, 2016, through Monday, January 2, 2017. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2017!

Yours truly,
Steve

December 16, 2016 - Week 16

Dear Dale Street Community,

This week, Mrs. Crable's fourth grade class used Kahoot to learn more about animal adaptations.  A lot of fun!

Special thanks to Dale Street's Newspaper Club for sharing the first, 'hot off the press' Dale Street Times.  What a great read!

Hour of Code continued at #beproudbedale this week. Take a peek....

From the Physical Education Department

Whether we are moving in the gym or learning about the nutrition that fuels our bodies the fourth grade Physical Education and Health classes have been active!

Food label reading is on the health agenda for the month.  Has your child become a know it all about high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and artificial ingredients?
Ask your fifth grader about how we successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean with explorers in search for the fountain of youth and gold. Team building at its best!

Acknowledge how much you appreciate your child’s teachers and give them the tools to innovate with an MCPE Blue Ribbon Fund donation.  For donations made by Thursday 12/22, a personalized note will be hand-delivered to your chosen teacher or staff member by 12/23.  Take advantage of this fast, easy and always appreciated gift that gives right back to the schools. http://www.medfieldcoalition.org/events-programs/blue-ribbon-program/

December 9, 2016 - Week 15

Greetings Dale Street Families!

It's been another great week at Dale Street!

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for the first Positive Referral breakfast of the 2016-2017 school year.  The Food Service department provided coffee, juice, and a variety of delicious treats for everyone to enjoy.  Thank you to them for all of their hard work organizing this event.  Lastly, a huge thank you to all of the students who continue to demonstrate outstanding character.  We are so proud of you for making such great choices each and every day!

The Dale Street School participated in Hour of Code this week.  Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of computer programming activities.  To view some of the exciting things that the students were involved with, please visit code.org.

The Dale Street Student Advisory Council met this morning.  We were lucky to have former Dale Street student and current Medfield High School senior, Makayla D. visit our meeting.  Dale Street will be working with Makayla over the next week to create cards for active soldiers and/or soldiers being treated at Walter Reed Medical Center.  The specifics for the cards are:
*Written on 8 1/2 x 11 paper
*Just include first name (no personal information)
*Some possible ideas: draw holiday items, thank you for your service, get well soon, stay strong, stay safe, happy holidays
*Students can make more than one card if they want
*Cards are due back to school by Thursday, December 15th
Participation is voluntary.
Dale Street has completed a very impressive year of fundraising for Global Giving!!! We have collected $10,000 for Coalition for Courage, tying our second largest donation raised in 2012. We are so grateful for everyone's contribution to this wonderful cause!  Special thanks to Ms. Sager's class for spearheading this initiative! Check out this beautiful thank you note from Liz Berges, Executive Director of Coalition for Courage.  Bravo #beproudbedale!
Mr. Mason's fifth grade class displayed their Pax projects on Friday.  Students chose from a variety of differentiated products to showcase a scene or summarize the book Pax.  These kids are unbelievable!
Our school-wide Guidance lessons with Ms. W. & Mrs. S. continued this week.  Students in Grade 4 continued to learn about the attributes of sympathy and empathy.

Positive Referral!!!
These students received Positive Referrals this week for being helpful, responsible and positive school citizens.  Super job!!

Mrs. Delaney's Fine Arts class worked with shadow and light to create some wonderful artwork!  #talentedstudents

Term 1 Report Cards

On Monday (12/12) students will bring home their report cards for the first term.   If you have any questions about your child's work or the report card, please start by having a conversation with your child.  If questions still exist, please contact the teacher directly to gain more insight.
As always, thank you for reading.  Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Steve
