October 30, 2020 - Week 7

Happy Friday, Dale Street Families,

It was a sensational, and dare I say, spooktacular week!   It was great fun having students show up on Wednesday in their Halloween gear!  Special thanks to the parents for organizing and running class Halloween activities on Zoom.  Here are some exciting things that took place last week and some information regarding upcoming events.

On Tuesday, students in Ms. DiPesa's fourth-grade class enjoyed a fun Halloween activity learning all about the human skeleton and bones! They know exactly how many bones are in our hands and wrist!

During the first Student Council meeting, representatives voted to support local restaurants by “sponsoring” them.  Students will help promote/advertise for local restaurants knowing that many businesses are having difficulties during the pandemic.  What a great idea to help the community!  Be sure to follow my blog for more information.

If your student is a Student Council representative or alternate but missed the meeting last week, please remind them to check their school email. Our next Zoom meeting will be on Wednesday (11/4). Details about the Student Council meeting were emailed directly to our representatives and alternates.

Our Medfield Public School teachers and staff are working tirelessly to ensure our children's safety, social-emotional health, educational progress, and happiness. Together, the K-8 PTO, High School PTO, and MCPE are excited to launch the Heroes Under the Mask Campaign which celebrates the positive experiences that go above and beyond the normal role of teachers, staff, and administrators. This is your chance to recognize all the little and big things they are doing to make this unsettled time purposeful!  Please take a moment to share the positive experiences your family is experiencing during this time by nominating a hero using the Heroes Under the Mask Nomination Form. Nominations will be shared publicly so that we can celebrate the positive efforts as a community.

After spending time researching and studying landforms, Grade 4 students in Ms.Plympton's class showcased their presentations.  Well done, young learners!

Students may bring lunch from home or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. Lunch is prepared by our cafeteria staff and is delivered to the classrooms.  Meals prepared in the cafeteria will be free to all students for the 2020-2021 school year.  Families will still need to complete the free & reduced lunch application

Medfield Outreach has extended their weekly drop-in mental health hours through November.  Please check out this flyer for more information.

On Wednesday, Mr. Douglas' fourth-grade class participated in their weekly Sanford Harmony social-emotional learning lesson.  This week's Grade 4 focus: Our Classroom Identity.  If you have a fourth-grader ask them: What does it mean to them to be part of a group?

This week in Art with Mrs. Delaney, grade 4 students finished up their shape creatures just in time for Halloween. Very talented artists!

October 23, 2020 - Week 6

Hello Dale Street Families,

Amazing to think that another week has come and gone.  We had a lot of great things going on this week both here at Dale Street (in-person) and during our remote learning time.  I continue to be so impressed with the way our students and staff at #beproudbedale meet the unprecedented challenges they are faced with head-on, come with a smile every day, and persevere to excel in what they do.  Check out a few of the wonderful scenes from this week...

On a visit to Cohort C this week, these fourth-grade students in Ms. Hayes' class shared the awesome landforms that they created.  This project (using recyclable materials) was an extension of the science unit students are currently studying.  Check out these volcanoes...

Halloween is just around the corner and we are committed to continuing our tradition of holiday celebrations! We invite you to help us celebrate Halloween in style! How you ask? Here’s the plan!

1. Participate in our Virtual Class Halloween Party! Have your child attend school on Wednesday, October 28th (remote learning day) dressed in his/her costume! Students are encouraged to dress up in their costumes.  Please note that students’ faces should not be covered with a mask, hood, or other items during the time they are on Zoom. Please do not allow your child to bring fake weapons into the Zoom meeting to accompany his/her costume, and particularly violent themes should be avoided.

2. Enjoy a “Party in a Bag!” Before Wednesday, October 28th, have your child decorate a brown paper lunch bag in a Halloween theme. Once decorated, fill it with a few of your child’s favorite food items. Some examples are: juice box or mini water bottle, small salty snack, fun sweet snack (cupcake, cookie), additional items could be a piece of fruit, a small yogurt, or any additional healthy snack.  Adding a little note to your child's bag will definitely make them happy!  Students will be able to enjoy their “Party in a Bag” snacks at a designated time during their zoom with their classmates and teacher on Wednesday, October 28.

3. Guess the Pumpkin Weight! Beginning this week, students will be able to check out our official Dale Street School pumpkin outside the front office. The question is, how much does it weigh? Have your students check it out and then submit their best guess to DalePumpkinContest@gmail.com by the end of the day on Thursday, October 29th. The winner will have the Dale pumpkin delivered to his/her home before Halloween night! In the case of a tie, all students with the correct guess will be entered into a drawing for the pumpkin.

This week, students in Ms. Sager's fifth-grade class used pictures from the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg during writing.  Students used pictures and very minimal text to develop their own creative stories.  So cool!

This week, Mr. Douglas' fourth-grade class had a visit from reading specialist, Mrs. Callahan to talk about 'again and again moments.' Students worked with literature they are currently reading or have read to notice when things occur again and again in the text.  This strategy will help students understand their books at a deeper level.

Please check out this flyer from Medfield Outreach about weekly drop-in mental health hours during the month of October.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Vancura and I visited with Dale Street's Student Council representatives and alternates.  These kids are unbelievable!  They are already talking about ways to make positive contributions to the Medfield community.  Stay tuned...

On Wednesday, Ms. Flynn's fourth-grade students participated in a synchronous Zoom lesson focusing on multiples and factors and the difference between them. Students did a great job answering questions and explaining their reasoning.

On a visit to Ms. Slachta's fourth-grade classroom this week, students were taking a deep dive into locating multiples of a number in math.  It was great to see students' hard work and great thinking.

In case you missed the virtual "Meet the Staff" presentation, here is the link. We hope you find this information helpful and informative.

On Thursday, Dr. Bless delivered science kits for our fourth-grade students and teachers.  Dr. Bless works with an organization named Science Engineering Education Development (SEED).  SEED has partnered with Dale Street to provide introductory lessons including Secret Codes, Light, and Circuits, Weathering, and Sound that align with the Grade 4 curriculum.  Our students and teachers are grateful for this opportunity and can't wait to get started!
