The Dale Street School has decided to dedicate its second Spirit Day to collecting donations to support the Medfield Animal Shelter. Our school is doing this as way to connect to our community. We will be collecting items to donate to the shelter beginning Monday, February 8th through Friday, February 12th. The Medfield Animal Shelter rescues lost or abandoned animals and provides shelter until they find new homes. They depend on donations of food, cleaning supplies and cat litter.  For more information, refer to medfieldshelter.com.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.

To raise awareness for the Medfield Animal Shelter drive, Friday, February 12, will be a school-wide Spirit Day.  The theme will be 'Multiples' Day.'   Staff and students are invited to participate.

Mrs. Bars' fifth grade students spent time this week diving into their fraction unit.

Valentine's Day is fast approaching....very exciting! In an effort to ensure safety for all of our students and staff, we are requesting that no food/candy be sent in with Valentine's cards next week. Teachers and Head Room parents will be sending out information in the coming week to detail specific classroom celebrations. The Head Room Parent will be coordinating this effort.  Please keep food and drink to these four categories: something salty, something sweet, healthy fruit, and water.  Additionally, please be sensitive of allergies within classrooms.  The snack time and the Valentine's themed activities will take place at different times depending on students’ schedules. Thank you in advance for your assistance to help create a fun and safe day at Dale Street!
Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade class used padlet to make observations and inferences this week. Great work girls and boys! Take a look at a few ....

"I think that it's good that people are playing sports no matter what color skin they have it shouldn't matter what color skin you have to do anything."
"In the magazine cover, it looks like they are showing all stuff he does, like that he goes on trial, since he was a big thing that everyone wanted to talk about."
"In the woman hurdles poster I am questioning: Why do women have to wear dresses when they are trying to do a sport but men can wear what they want?  In the statistics about sports in America I am questioning: why are there so many boys that do sports than girls?  In the wheaties cheerleaders why is there a boy on the big blow up box and not a girl?  In the Dorothea Duglass poster I am questioning: Why is she wearing a dress?  In the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings poster I am questioning: Why is there a girl at the top?  In the Athletics Poster poster I am questioning: Why is there a black woman playing sports? I think they must have not been allowed to play sports.  In the Babe Ruth poster I am questioning: Why does Babe Ruth have old dirty looking clothes."
Information about Strep Throat

What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a sore throat that usually develops suddenly and is caused by streptococcus bacteria that are passed around through nose and mouth droplets.  After coughing, talking or sneezing, these droplets travel less than 3 feet and often land on objects/surfaces, so are spread both through the air to those in close contact or by touching objects contaminated with respiratory secretions.
*Most sore throats however, are caused by viruses and are not treated with antibiotics. A sore throat accompanied by a runny nose, cough and congestion  is more likely to be caused by a virus
.
Scarlet Fever, a fine red rash which feels like sandpaper and is more prominent in the armpits, groin area and creases of the elbow and knees, is also caused by strep.
It is also possible to get strep throat from contact with sores from strep skin infections such as impetigo.

Why is it important that your child received treatment?
1.       Treatment reduces spread.  If not treated, your child may continue to spread the infection to other members of your family and other children.
2.       Some individuals who are not treated develop complications including: ear infections, sinusitis, abscesses in the tonsils, or infection of the lymph nodes.
3.       Treatment with antibiotics can often prevent rheumatic fever. Rarely, some children with strep infections later develop rheumatic fever which can cause complications of the heart and kidneys.

When can your child come back to school?
Your child can return to school after taking antibiotics for at least 24 hours and any fever is gone, without the use of fever educing medications such as Tylenol or Advil/Motrin.

What should you do to prevent the spread of strep throat?
1.       Thoroughly wash your hands and your child’s hands after wiping noses and before             eating or preparing food.
2.       Wash dishes carefully in hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.
3.       Do not allow children to share cups, spoons, or toys that are put in the mouth.
4.       Do not allow sharing of food.
