May 27, 2022 - Week 36

Hello Dale Street Community,

It was an emotional week here at Dale Street.  We faced tragedy within our school community and our hearts continue to be with Robb Elementary’s educators, students, families, and the entire Uvalde community during this time.  In tragic situations like these, it is important that Dale Street keeps things as normal as possible for everybody.  Please take a look at the awesome sites and activities that took place at our school this week.  The students and staff at #beproudbedale continue to amaze and are true rockstars.

(Will be updated with new information when necessary)

Today our school held a Memorial Day assembly. The students did a remarkable job.  The Pledge of Allegiance was great and the National Anthem was spectacular - thanks, Jillian and Emily.  Grade 5 students Vaishnavi (5Sager) and Preston (5Johnson) recited the Gettysburg Address, and Ethan (5Condon) played Taps.  We had the extra special treat of hearing remarks from Grade 5 teacher and Major in the United States Army Reserves, Ms. Burnham.
 It was a beautiful morning!

Positive Sign Thursday!

'WE ARE POSITIVE!'

Last Night, the PTO hosted the Grade 5 Dale Street Variety Show.  The students who performed did a fantastic job!  The talent and the bravery the students demonstrated were phenomenal!  Special thanks to Jill Werner, Maryhelen MacInnes, all the volunteers, and our emcees, Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Cole for helping produce a great show.

Congratulations to this week's Dale Street Positive Referrals!  We so appreciate students that go above and beyond to model our school's Core Values.

Harrison was recognized for reflecting the spirit of continuous growth.

Amari was recognized for being extremely compassionate.

Ben was recognized for showing continuous growth and making great progress.

Emaline was recognized for being very helpful and supportive.

Thomas was recognized for being inclusive and respectful.

James was recognized for showing great acts of kindness.

Caroline was recognized for being kind and supportive to her classmates.

Dale Street Field Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 9th (Rain Day, Friday, June 10th).  Mrs. Nawrocki and Mrs. Laughna are planning an exciting day of activities for our 4th and 5th graders.  Grade 4 will participate in Field Day during the morning (9:15 - 11:30) and Grade 5 will participate in the afternoon (12:20 - 2:35). Field Day will take place on the field between the Dale Street and Memorial Schools.  Classes will have the opportunity to rotate through nine stations. Classes will rotate with their classroom. All activities will take place on the field and on the blacktop.

We have found it to be helpful to

**have students wear comfortable clothes and sneakers on this day

**apply sunscreen before coming to school.  Please provide more sunscreen for re-application.

**send children with a hat and extra water on this day.

Classes will be eating bagged lunches. Students may bring their own bagged lunch or purchase a bagged lunch from the cafeteria. Note: There will no other lunch options on this day.

This week, Grade 5 students made the most of their time with Dale Street's Technology Integrationist, Mr. Ahern.  Students used our MCPE-granted Sphero bots to code and grow their learning.  learning + engagement = fun

With the warm weather ahead to close out the school year, please send students to school with a refillable water bottle with their name on it so that they can stay hydrated throughout the day. We have a large number of unclaimed reusable water bottles in our lost and found that may belong to your child- please tell them to stop by and look if you are missing one.  Putting your child's name on it will ensure that it is returned if found. Students may refill their bottles using one of our two bottle filler stations. We hope to be outdoors as much as possible for the remainder of the year so students may wish to have a hat and sunscreen moving forward as well.

The Dale Street Chorus under the direction of Mr. Ruggiero and Mrs. Tremblay, worked hard this week getting ready for their June 6th concert.  They are sounding awesome!

On Wednesday, students and staff participated in the first-ever PTO-sponsored Fun Run! It was an amazing day!  The weather, the music, and the smiles made for an incredible day.  This day would not have been possible without the efforts of Kelly Scobbo, Nicole Drummond, Jodi Bills, Nesse McCabe, the PTO volunteers, and all the families who made pledges for the event. Thank you!

Over the last few weeks, the behavior at Dale Street has not been what is expected.  Earlier this week, I held 'town meetings' to make sure that our students understood the expectations they need to meet in order to fully participate in our end-of-year events. It was a great way to kick off our last 20 days of school and the students were an excellent audience. I mentioned to students that the end of the school year has amazing and wonderful events on the calendar. Field day, assemblies, shaved ice truck, and more. I reminded students that these events are privileges - privileges for students upholding and modeling our Core Values.  Moving forward …our school's expectation is to see an improvement in everyone’s behavior.  This includes: No touching one another or being in one another's personal space, being kind to one another at all times, and using appropriate school language and movements (not imitating things that one sees on TikTok or YouTube).  I reassured students that they are all really great kids and I love being their principal.  However, my number one priority is to provide a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable environment for everybody at Dale Street.  I hope this 'town meeting' will refocus students and help them stay on track as we finish out the school year.

¿Qué animal es? This week in World Language, students in Ms. McKenzie's grade 5 classroom spent time asking questions about animals from the Galápagos Islands.

Thank you to our Friday DJ's who rocked the lunchroom today!

Today, Dale Street held another POP (Parents on the Playground).  Today's activity... cornhole.  Huge thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Consilvio (Simon's parents) who facilitated (again) today's POP.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here.

A variety of excellent artwork was on display on Tuesday night at the Dale Street Art Show.  Special thanks to our incredible students and our wonderful art teacher, Mrs. Delaney for creating such a wonderful environment!

Please save the date of Thursday, June 16th at 9:30 a.m. for Dale Street's Grade 5 Celebration.  This year, the Grade 5 Celebration will take place on the basketball court outdoors and we are hoping for dry and nice weather.  Grade 5 families are welcome and we are asking that all guests bring a lawn chair for seating in an area off the pavement.  The health and safety of our students, their families, and the staff continue to be our number one priority.  If there is inclement weather on this day, the celebration will be held in the gymnasium.  If this is the case, we will only be able to welcome 2 guests per family for the celebration.

Best wishes for a great Memorial Day weekend!

Steve

May 20, 2022 - Week 35

 Hello Dale Street Families,

What a fun and fast week!  As your children probably reported...MCAS sessions have come to an end.  Once again, I was so impressed with the hard work, effort, and determination our students put in to their MCAS performance! Our grade 4 students had 2 days of testing and our grade 5 students had four days of testing.  Students really took their time and put in the effort! We will have make-up sessions next week for students who have missed one or more sessions. Although MCAS gets a lot of publicity, please take a minute to check out all the amazing things students and staff were involved in.

Today, Dale Street held another POP (Parents on the Playground).  Today's activity... chalk mosaic art on the pavement.  Huge thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Consilvio (Simon's parents) who facilitated today's POP.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here.

Last Friday, the PTO Kids' Night Out returned!  It was such a fun and exciting night for our #beproudbedale 4th graders. Special thanks to all of the parents who volunteered.  I am excited to visit Grade 5's night tonight.

During this week's SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lesson, Mrs. Flynn's class worked on a lesson titled 'Stand up to bullies.' Students rewrote negative bullying experiences and turned them around so they had positive outcomes.  Students showed great kindness and empathy!

In Spanish this week with Mrs. LeVangie, Mrs. Flynn's fourth-grade students collaborated with classmates to interview each other about their living spaces -  ¿Qué hay en tu casa?

On Monday, students in Ms. Plympton's grade 4 classroom tackled some challenging math problems - no problem for these OPE rockstars they used a teamwork approach.

So happy to share that our nurses received the Above & Beyond award and
Grade 5 teacher, Bethany Sager received the Robert C. Maguire Global Perspectives in Education award at Tuesday night's MCPE Annual Meeting.  Congratulations to these amazing educators and individuals!

Dale Street staff work tirelessly every day to make meaningful connections.  Here is Grade 5 teacher, Ms. Burnham doing just that.

On Wednesday, Dale Street held a Parent Information Night for our incoming fourth-grade parents.  It was so great to meet families and share the wonderful things that happen at Dale Street. Special thanks to the teachers who stayed late to present and our rockstar students who came back to present.

Mrs. Tumbleson and the Grade 4 flute players had a lot of fun this week! There is always so much laughter, joy, and great playing in their lessons. Keep up the great work!
