March 13, 2020 - Week 27

Greetings Dale Street Community,

We missed seeing all of our rockstar students today.  However, I understand and support the decision to keep them home.  I have spent many years as an educator and this is one of the most unusual times I have ever experienced.  Please stay tuned for continued timely updates from Dr. Marsden.  Stay healthy everyone!

On Monday, students in Ms. Isaacson's fourth-grade class used the time to learn more about 'point of view'.  Students used our Walking Classroom to connect exercise and the learning they are doing in reader's and writer's workshops.

This week with Ms. Warner, students in grade 5 worked on problem-solving strategies using Harmony, our social-emotional learning curriculum.  Students used examples of problems, selected realistic solutions, and determined the solutions' effectiveness.

Bravo to students in Ms. Sager's fifth-grade class! On Wednesday, students were so engaged as they checked out each other’s informational books! What amazing finished projects!

Thank you from Boston Children's Hospital

Dear students and staff at the Dale Street School,

Child Life Services at Boston Children's Hospital would like to thank you for your generous donation.  Your thoughtfulness brought so much joy to our patients and families.

Being in the hospital can be a difficult time for children and their families.  Your donation allows us to help bring smiles and wonder to all those who receive care at BCH.

With much gratitude,
Child Life Services

Congratulations to these 2 Dale Street Destination Imagination teams who came in first in their challenge divisions, qualifying both teams for the State tournament to be held in Worcester later this month.  We are so happy for and proud of each one of these wonderful students.  It is a fantastic accomplishment and we wish them the best of luck in the State tournament!

DI DUDES

Ryan, Liam, Alicia, Charlie, Nathan, Luke, and Danny (Coaches Mrs. Puglia and Mrs. Werner)

DI Dudes participated in the "In the Cards" engineering challenge.  They had to build a bridge out of playing cards and duck tape.  The bridge had to span between two bases and pass over a barrier.  They then had to successfully move a load by technical method across the bridge, all while performing a skit that they created themselves.

DI DIVAS
Hannah, Paige, Kate, Naya, Sidney, Molly, and Keira (Coaches Mr.Crocker and Mr. Kenworthy)

The DI Divas did the "It's About Time" service project.  For their project, they had to select and deliver a community service engagement.  The girls decided to do something on climate change.  They evaluated a number of different options in partnership with the principal at Dale Street.  In the end, they decided to eliminate the plastic straws in the cafeteria and put up some posters to raise awareness in the school.  This helped reduce plastic waste, save money for the school, with no drawbacks from the students. A win all around.

Students in Ms. Spink's and Ms. Bertschmann's fifth-grade class took time on Tuesday to collaborate in science. Check out these amazing food webs!

Dale Street School celebrates the 3rd annual Tournament of Books!

The vision for this year’s March Madness-style reading celebration is inspired by the important work of We Need Diverse Books. The brackets will be filled with the creators and stories that, “reflect and honor the lives of all people.” No matter which title comes in first place, we know that books always win-- no matter what! Students are encouraged to read as many of the 8 choices as possible before the "Elite Eight" brackets are set.

Check out these slides for specific book information.

Happy reading!

In light of the unfolding situation with COVID-19, this year's MCPE Spelling Bee is canceled. We are sad to miss this fun event, but we support all the steps being taken by the District to keep our town safe.  If you have already registered, your registration cost (including fees) will be refunded in the next two weeks. You will receive an email when that is completed. Thank you for your understanding.

As temperatures inched close to 70 degrees on Monday, Mrs. Scott's and Ms. Hayes' fourth-grade classes took the opportunity to use the playground as an outside learning space.  So great!

March 6, 2020 - Week 26

Good evening Dale Street Families,

What a fantastic week here at #beproudbedale!  This week's blog is jammed packed full of awesomeness and contains helpful information and dates for our students and families.  Take a peek......

This week, students in Ms. Sager's fifth-grade class continued to work hard on their informational writing.  They also highlighted one of our Core Values (#collaboration) as they peer edited each other's writing before their writing went to print.

Special thanks to Dale Street's Speech-Language Pathologist (and co-chair of the Student Council), Mrs. Vancura for taking time last weekend to drop off Dale Street's collected donations at Children's Hospital.

Thank you to all the parents who made time to come to this morning's Principal's Coffee.  We had a very thorough discussion highlighting the upcoming placement process and the Dale Street Building Project.  If you were unable to attend, you can access the presentation here.  This presentation is also on the Dale Street website.

On Wednesday, Dale Street math specialist, Mrs. Perachi visited Mr. Mason's fifth-grade classroom.  She shared a really cool way to learn about volume.  Please ask your child about it.

Conferences are just around the corner. Conferences are a wonderful time to check in with your child's teacher about their academic and social/emotional growth. Conference dates are set for Thursday, March 12th and Tuesday, March 17th. Both days are half days for the students with dismissal at 11:40 a.m. Please note that Term II report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, March 10th.

With the beautiful weather on Tuesday, Ms. MacDonnell's class took math outside to practice creating line plots on the blacktop! Eventually, their work took up the whole half-court line with all that data!

A Message from the Nurse and Physical Education Staff

Next week, March 9th - 13th, students will be running the PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) in Physical Education class. What is the PACER?  The PACER is a 20m cardiovascular fitness test that measures aerobic capacity. Participants’ performance is measured according to Healthy Fitness Zone standards based on age and gender, developed by The Cooper Institute. If your child usually uses an inhaler before running, please make sure that he or she has one in the nurse's office. Thank you!

Ms. Johnson's fifth-grade students were busy understanding how volume works while building their own “hotels”.  Students did a great job explaining how they were able to find how many cubic units made up each floor.  Special thanks to Mrs. Perachi for visiting and helping out.

Check out the PTO update with information about the Giving Tree for Dale Street staff, Winter Carnival, volunteer opportunities and more!

This week, grade 4 classrooms were visited by Dale Street Guidance Counselor, Ms. Warner and discussed the very important topic of conflict resolution during their Harmony social-emotional lesson.  Please ask your child how an owl, a turtle, and a shark will handle problems differently.
