February 26, 2016 - Week 24

Greetings Dale Street Families and welcome back!

Dale Street staff and students returned from February vacation refreshed, ready to learn and excited for a full week of school.  We hope that you all had a wonderful break!

On Tuesday, Mrs. Foley's class and Ms. DiPesa's class celebrated that they are 100 days smarter!  What a great year it has been so far!

This week our students donned their fancy attire for a day at the Wheelock Family Theatre to see the production of Mary Poppins.  It was a wonderful performance!

"Most Likely to Succeed" Film Screening and Discussion: A Medfield Community Event
Most Likely to Succeed offers an inspiring look at what students and teachers are capable of when given the opportunity. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Greg Whiteley, the film has been an official selection of two dozen of the world’s top film festivals, including Sundance, Tribeca, AFI, Cleveland, Dallas, Milwaukee, Sarasota, Seattle, Virginia, and Bergen. It’s been featured at leading conferences on education, including ASU/GSV, SxSWedu, Harvard/GoldmanSachs, and NewSchools Venture Fund. Audience members call it the most compelling film ever done on the topic of school.

The film will be shown on March 29th from 6:30-8pm, at the Medfield High School Auditorium, with small group discussions with Medfield Public School Administrators from 8-9pm. You are invited to see the film and join the conversation! This is NOT one solution to education. This film asks us to ask questions, which will hopefully lead us to our own answers. PLEASE VISIT www.MLTSfilm.org TO SEE THE TRAILER! Principal's Coffee - Friday, March 4th

On Friday, March 4th I will be hosting our second term Principal's Coffee.  During this time, we will talk about the process we will use for placing students in classrooms for 2016-2017 school year. The coffee will begin at 8:45 AM take place in the Dale Street cafeteria.  Please note that if you are stuck for child care, please feel free to bring your little ones.  I hope that you will be able to stop in after you drop off your child(ren) on this day.  We will be providing refreshments for this presentation.

This week Mrs. Flynn's class used their creative side to develop comic strips of their favorite scenes from The Orphan of Ellis Island.  Awesome job!

Parent/teacher conferences are just around the corner. Conferences are a wonderful time to check in with your child's teacher about their academic and social/emotional growth. Conference dates are set for Tuesday, March 8th and Wednesday, March 16th. Both days are half days for the students with dismissal at 11:35 AM. Please note that Term II report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, April 5th.

Take a look at fraction time in Mrs. Cowell's class this week.  What talented students!

Special thanks to Mr. Kidd (Ella's uncle) who visited Ms. Bertschmann's and Ms. Walunas' classes today.  He was able to share his vast knowledge in the field of engineering with our students.

Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd - Dr. Seuss' birthday.  This year, the Dale Street School will participate in this very important day by bringing together students, adults, and books.  Each classroom will have a special guest reader.    In addition to special guest readers, there will be a school spirit day (dress in Dr. Seuss theme) and a ‘Read Across America’ challenge.  This challenge will have students record how many minutes they read on March 2nd (1 minute = 1 mile).  At the end of the day, library assistant, Mrs. Read will tabulate if our school can go from Medfield, MA to Los Angeles, CA (2,973 miles)!
It is sure to be a great day!

This is an email I received from a Medfield High School student we helped in November.  Thank you so much for helping me make cards for soldiers who were away from home during the holiday season. With your help, I was able to send more than 300 holiday cards to a US Naval base in Hawaii. One of the Quarter Masters, Courtney, contacted me to say, “Thank you.” She said the cards really brightened everyone’s day and meant so much to them. Everyone loved the cards and well wishes so thank you again!  Bravo, Dale Street!

Thank you for reading!  Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Steve
