September 25, 2015 - Week 4

Hello Dale Street Families,

It's been a busy week here at the Dale Street!  Parent Information Night was very successful last night and it was great to see all of you in attendance.  On behalf of the entire Dale Street staff, I would like to thank you for coming and we look forward to working with you all throughout the school year. 






Mrs. Cowell's students and Mrs. Lowerre's students started The Great Banana Challenge this week. Students began collaborating about specific strategies to keep a banana from getting too soft.  I can't wait to hear about some of the strategies!




    • Yankee Candle Fundraiser - Dale’s biggest fundraiser is coming soon!  Flyers were sent home today. Fundraiser will be held 9/25-10/9.
    • Save the date for KIDS NIGHT OUT - 4th grade November 6th & 5th grade November 20th.  More details to come soon.
    • Dale Street PTO meeting: Friday, October 23rd @ 10:30 am in the Teachers' Lounge.

Attention all Dale Street Families!  Our Yankee Candle Fundraiser began yesterday Thursday, September 24th and goes through Thursday, October 8th.  This is a great way to get a jump on your holiday shopping and at the same time help earn money for the Dale Street School.  Information packets were sent home yesterday with your children.  Items can be ordered by filling out the enclosed form or online and shipped directly to your house.  If you have any questions, please contact Siobhan Dennehy at 617-605-6944 or dennehy4@verizon.net.  Thank you so much for your support!




Registration is open and filling for MCPE’s November Community Trivia Night and the Student Trivia Challenge events. These events promise to be fast-paced and humor-filled, testing your knowledge in geography, sports, music, science and history. The Community Adult Trivia Night is set for Friday, November 13th, and the Student Trivia Challenge is set for Tuesday, November 10th. Don’t delay as Trivia Night sold out the last two years! Subway and MCPE: MCPE has partnered with Subway of Medfield. The first Tuesday of every month will be "MCPE Subway Day" at Subway from 2:00-8 PM.  TWENTY PERCENT of all proceeds will be donated to MCPE, over a 9-month period. Please make a note that the first "MCPE Subway Day" will be, Tuesday, October 6th



This week students in Mrs. Foley's class and students in Mrs. Crable's class participated in a communicative activity during their World Language block. These students had to use Spanish to find their matching famous pair! 





  
Today teachers spent time collaborating with math specialist, Shephali Fox and Curriculum Director, Kim Cave.  We had phenomenal discussions regarding the implementation of our new enVision2.0 math program.

September 18, 2015 - Week 3

Last Friday our school gathered for our Opening of the Year Assembly.  Using the Schools of Fish Philosophy, our students learned about our theme of the year - Play!  Special thanks to Grade 5 teacher Ms. Walunas for organizing this great event.  It was a fantastic assembly!

I had a great time this week visiting and reading to fourth and fifth grade classrooms.  I hope to visit all of the classrooms by the end of next week.  





The PTO Back to School Picnic was a blast last Friday!  Special thanks to our incredible PTO for organizing this wonderful event and all the families who attended the picnic!

Medfield Day Update. Please look for the Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE) booth on Medfield Day, Saturday, September 19th.  We will be located right outside the Montrose School on North Street.  Enter our children's book raffle and try your luck in our prize raffle to win an amazing Medfield basket. Come learn about our exciting plans for this year and the many ways you and MCPE can work together to help enrich your children's education.

The Medfield Coalition for Public Education (MCPE) is a non-profit organization funded to provide academic enrichment for all Medfield Public Schools. MCPE awards grants submitted by staff, teachers, administrators and counselors to support the development of innovative programs, curriculum and enrichment. Thank you for supporting MCPE and its initiatives.


Members of our fourth grade have been visiting our Library/Media Center for an introduction of the great things it offers.  Special thanks to library assistant, Susan Read for introducing our fourth graders to the library.

  • Please visit our website http://medfieldpto.weebly.com and review the open PTO volunteer positions and see how you can get involved, including volunteering to be a room parent.
  • Please consider submitting your PTO dues envelopes. 
  • Bay State Textiles - Donate clean and dry clothing, linens, pocketbooks, stuffed animals, accessories and shoes in the textile box located outside each school.  The PTO generates a rebate of $100 per ton on textiles collected.
  • At the PTO board meeting yesterday morning there was a change made to some of the meeting date times.  The new times are: October 20th at 9:00 am, January 7th at 9 am, March 4th at 9 am, and May 12th at 9 am.
The Book Fair will take place at Park Street Books on the afternoon/evening of October 7th.  More information will be available closer to the date.  

On Tuesday after school, the Dale Street staff participated in a Life Threatening Allergies and Epinephrine training.  Special thanks to school nurse, Kathy Thompson for facilitating this important training.  


There is no school on Wednesday, September 23rd 
in observance of Yom Kippur.  

Dale Street PIN night will be on Thursday, September 24th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.

September 10, 2015 - Week 2

Greetings Dale Street Families!

I hope that you all had a great week! We have completed 5 days of school and I'm happy to report that things are off to a great start at Dale Street.  I have to commend the students and Dale Street staff for working through some very warm conditions this week. Great job!


On a visit to Mrs. Bars' fifth grade classroom this week, students were working collaboratively solving integrated math and science problems.  Good work boys and girls!










This week Dr. Marsden sent information to families with directions for accessing the Aspen Student Information Parent Portal. As a reminder, parents are able to submit verification for the AUP (Internet Acceptable Use Policy); the Digital Citizenship component is coming), and for receipt of the Elementary Student Handbook.  


For the first time this year, elementary parents are able to access the Parent Portal to provide this information which eliminates the use of paper. However, with all things new come some bumps in the road. We seek your patience as we try to work out a few glitches. To that end, here are some reminders:


  • Hard copies were inadvertently sent home earlier this week. Please log onto the Parent Portal to fill in the appropriate information.
  • When accessing the Parent Portal, the Dale Street folder is at the bottom right of the front page.
  • Your eligibility to change student information will expire. However, after the designated time period, you will be able to contact the school directly for any changes that may occur throughout the school year.
  • If you completed information in the Portal already, you may want to go back in and revisit the student pick up and bus stop contact information. Based on parent feedback, the language has been adjusted to be more explicit. Thank you for your cooperation! We appreciate it.


Congratulations to our Positive Referral this week.  Thank you for making our school such a great place!   We are very proud of you!




  • Dale Street Picture Day is on Tuesday, September 15th.  Please make sure that your student has a picture form.  If you have any questions, please contact the Dale Street office.

  • Dale Street PIN night is on Thursday, September 24th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.  

Dale Street's Back to School Picnic




The PTO is inviting all Dale Street families to attend a picnic on Friday, September 11th from 5:00 - 6:30 PM on the field between the Dale Street and Memorial Schools. Families are asked to bring their own picnic. All Dale Street students will receive a free ice cream from the ice cream truck, compliments of the PTO!


It was great to have the music program up and running this week.  These students are so talented!




Something to think about...
I am excited to announce that I will be hosting Principal's Coffees this year. Typically these gatherings last approximately an hour with a prescribed topic followed by open discussion.  Principal's Coffees will be held at 8:45 a.m. on a Friday (the first one is scheduled for October 23rd) in the Dale Street cafeteria.  I am always looking for topics that are of interest to Dale Street families.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.  More information will be forwarded closer to the first scheduled coffee.

Congratulations to Mr. David Ruggiero for receiving the Robert C. Maguire Global Perspectives in Education Award.  The Dale Street is proud of Mr. Ruggiero and has recently put up this plaque.  



Thank you to all of our students and staff who participated in today's Patriots Spirit Day. Let's hope it brings the team some luck!







You may have noticed the Dale Street School 2015 - 2016 daily agenda that your child/children have been bringing to and from school.  These agendas are provided by the school. Please take some time each evening to look over your child's/children's agenda.  This will help ensure all assignments can be completed in a timely manner.  Thank you in advance for your support!




4th Grade Physicals
The State of Massachusetts requires that schools have a current physical on file for all students entering Grade 4. If you have not already done so, please send a copy of a physical exam, completed within the past 12 months, to the nurse’s office.

Medications at School
Students who require any medication (prescription or over the counter) during school or at school sponsored activities, must provide authorization from their health care provider and a parent. The medication must be sent to school in an original, properly labeled container. Loose pills in baggies cannot be accepted. Pharmacies will provide an extra container for school if requested.  For the safety of all students, medications must be kept in the nurse’s office and dispensed by the nurse, unless other arrangements have been made. Please call the nurse’s office with any questions or to obtain a form. Forms may also be found at www.medfield.net under Pupil Services.  The school physician provides us with an order to administer Tylenol and/or Advil/Motrin if needed, with parental consent. These are the only medications that we can administer without a health care provider’s authorization.

When to Keep Your Child Home from School
     If your child is ill, please keep him/her at home to avoid exposing other students and              staff. Any child with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, a persistent cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or any other contagious condition should be kept at home.
     Students may return to school:

  • After they have been on an antibiotic for 24 hours  for conditions such as Strep Throat.
  • After they have been without a fever for 24 hours (without taking  fever reducing medication).
  • When they have not vomited or had diarrhea for 12-24 hours and have resumed a normal diet.
  • When they feel well enough to be in school for a full day.
      Please help us to keep your children healthy by reminding them to:

  • Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids. 
  • Please encourage your child to eat breakfast in the morning and remember to bring a  water bottle to school each day to keep well hydrated.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
  • Wash their hands frequently to decrease the spread of germs, especially before eating and after using the restroom. Hand sanitizers can also be used.
  • Practice good hygiene by covering their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, disposing of their tissues in the trash and washing their hands. Alternatively, when a tissue is not readily available, students should be coughing/sneezing into their sleeves, not hands, to minimize the spread of germs.

Injuries
Please be sure to let us know if your child is injured, especially if he or she is using crutches or has incurred a head injury. It is important for us to know if they have limited mobility, to discuss safety information and to make a plan for emergency evacuations.  Head injuries may necessitate a concussion accommodation plan.
