October 26, 2018 - Week 9

Greetings Dale Street!

Wow - what a great week here at Dale Street!  Math, Social Emotional Learning, Virtual Reality, STEM, and so much more.  Take a peek....

Ms. Warner (School Guidance Counselor) and Ms. Strekalovsky (School Psychologist)
began visiting classrooms this week to provide lessons to support the whole child.  The first round of lessons in Grade 4 will focus on Empathy and in Grade 5 - Problem Solving.
Thank you, Mrs. S. & Ms. W!

On Wednesday, Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade class took learning on the road when they used our PTO funded "Walking Classrooms" to learn more about similes and metaphors.
So fun!

Let there be light!  Mrs. Crable's fourth grade students used time this week to collaborate with wires and a battery to figure out how to light a light bulb.  It is amazing to see the intelligence, collaboration, and creativity all working together!

This week, fifth graders in Ms. Condon's and Mrs. Foley's fifth grade classrooms took a trip to Machu Picchu.  Students loved using our MCPE funded Google Viewfinders!

Mrs. Scott's fourth grade students used the app Flipgrid to showcase and explain their favorite multiplication strategy.  These young learners are showing their learning at a deep level!

We are very excited to announce that all 4th and 5th grade students now have an opportunity to complete biweekly math challenges. The first challenge was sent home with students this week. Future challenges will be available to print at home from the website linked below.
Students are free to solve as many problems as they can and will have about a week to turn their work in. We hope that all students and families find these problems to be a challenging, but fun activity.

More information, including a calendar of important dates and a link to download and print the challenges and solutions, is available at http://www.mathinaction.org/dale-st-school.html. Questions regarding the math challenge program can be directed to the math specialist, Alison Wells, at awells@email.medfield.net or me.

Congratulations to our Positive Referrals this week.  Thank you for making our school such a great place!   We are very proud of you!

This student is always helpful without being asked!

This student consistently demonstrates flexibility and is always participating!

Special thanks to Grade 4 teacher, Mrs. Scott for creating this Fipgrid video highlighting the steps to solving a multiplication problem using the partial product and area model methods.  If you would like a tutorial, you can view one here.

Students in Grade 5 were amazed by the various experiments when the Discovery Museum visited this week. Students participated in activities and discussions regarding the various states of matter and changes.  Special thanks to our very generous PTO for funding this wonderful experience.

Halloween at Dale Street

The Dale Street staff enjoys making Halloween a safe, exciting, and consistent experience for all students. On Wednesday, October 31st, all of our classrooms:

  • encourage all students to dress up in their costumes.  Please note that students’ faces may not be covered with a mask, hood, or other item. Please do not allow your child to bring fake weapons into school to accompany his/her costume, and particularly violent themes should be avoided.
  • will have Halloween themed activities.  Activities will be teacher-directed and run throughout the day.
  • will have classroom snacks sent into school on October 31st.  The Head Room Parent will be coordinating this effort.  Please keep food and drink to these four categories: something crunchy, something sweet, a healthy fruit, and water.  Additionally, please be sensitive of allergies within classrooms.  The snack time and the Halloween themed activities will take place at different times depending on students’ schedules.

We understand and are happy that the children will receive a plethora of treats on Halloween night. Come Thursday, the staff at Dale Street encourages healthy foods for student snack times to help promote optimal learning.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Check out who made it on national TV this past week.....Grade 4 teacher, Mr. Douglas (Red Sox jacket with the hood on) cheering on the Sox at Fenway in the World Series!

On Friday, November 2nd, students and staff are encouraged to participate in our school-wide spirit day.  Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite PJ's to school as a way to celebrate our first term community service initiative.
