August 31, 2018 - Week 1

Welcome Back Dale Street Families!

It was so good to be all back together this week.  The staff and I are super excited for this year.  Despite the warm temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday you could feel the positive energy throughout the building all week.  We are looking forward to a fantastic year!

As we start the 2018-2019 school year here at #beproudbedale, I would like to formally welcome the following people to their new positions at the Dale Street School.

  • Raelyn Carlyle, Grade 5 Teacher
  • Erin Costello, Grade 5 Teacher
  • Amanda Couture, Instructional Assistant
  • Mary Laughna, Wellness Teacher
  • Mairi Nawrocki, Wellness Teacher
  • Kelsey McKenzie, Instructional Assistant

Please join me in welcoming these individuals to the Dale Street staff.

Check out some of the sites from the first few days of school.

Mr. Douglas' fourth grade class had a special visitor....Library Media Specialist, Kerry Cowell stopped by to read a book.

Students in Mrs. Foley's fifth grade class used time this week to work in mindful minutes.

Mrs. Dowd's fourth grade class enjoyed the few breezes we had this week and took their writer's workshop outside.

Students in Ms. Costello's fifth grade class participated in a digital Breakout.

Students in Mrs. Crable's fourth grade class collaborated on a paper chain STEM challenge.

Ms. DiPesa's fourth grade class used toothpaste to show students the importance of what we say to others.  Moral: Kind words matter!

Mrs. Bertschmann's fifth grade students collaborated during a Core Value activity.

We are presently looking for Grade 4 parents/guardians who would like to volunteer to serve on the Dale Street School Council.  Meetings will be held on October 18th, January 17th, April 4th, and May 30th at 3:15 p.m. in the Dale Street Library Media Center. Please contact the Dale Street office (508) 359 - 5538 if you are interested.

Again this year, the Dale Street School will have a Student Advisory Council.  The objective of this group will be to talk with their classmates about concerns/initiatives in their classroom and/or the school.  The Student Advisory Council will consist of one student from each homeroom in Grades 4 and 5. There will also be an alternate selected from each homeroom.  Students interested in serving on the Student Advisory Council must write a one paragraph letter of interest.  This letter of interest will be distributed on Friday, September 7th and must be received by the close of school on September 14th.  The Student Advisory Council will meet on the first Friday of each month (starting in October) at 8:45 AM for about 35 minutes.  I would like to thank Mrs. Vancura who has volunteered again to work with me on the Dale Street School Advisory Council.

Dale Street encourages you to join us in modeling three key messages:

School is important!
Your child can do it!
We are here to help him/her!

This fall all Dale girls will have the opportunity to participate in new program called Girls on the Run!  It is a nationwide program that celebrates the inner strength of each girl, establishes a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness and culminates with a service project and 5K. More Program Information

The Dale program will be offered Tuesday and Thursdays from 3-4:15 PM late September through the first weekend of December.  Attendance at every practice is not mandatory but encouraged.  Girls will be checked out directly from school by coaches and all practices will take place at Dale.  In order for this program to run, we need coaches!  Information on How You Can Help

To sign your daughter up for this amazing opportunity visit Sign Up.  Choose Dale (12th site listed).  The site will explain the lottery system.  Please consider volunteering to help coach so that all interested girls will be able to participate! All sign ups must be in by 9/5/2018.

Image result for recess before lunch
As you may be aware, this year students at Dale Street are enjoying recess before they eat lunch.  After a few years of research and discussing this idea with our Food Service department, we decided to give it a try this year.  Research on this topic indicates: food waste is reduced, students eat and drink more and kids feel better in the afternoon because of this, there is a more pleasant eating environment for students, and there is improved behavior in the classroom (less of a need for a calm-down period).  The recess/lunch block is still the same amount of time (45 minutes) and has worked well during our first two days with lunches.  Students are encouraged to wash their hands when they come in from recess and there are multiple hand sanitizing stations located in the cafeteria.

From the Dale Street PTO:

Class Directories
This year we will be using a Google Form to gather information for classroom directories. It is optional to fill out the form, however only those who choose to participate will be included in the class directory and receive information about class celebrations from their Room Parents. All form entries must be received by Thursday, September 13, 2018. Directories will be emailed to those parents who have chosen to participate shortly there after. Please note - Each class directory will only include the children in that specific class. Follow this link to complete the class directory form.

Room Parent Registration Is Open
Want a fun way to get involved in your child's classroom? Become a room parent! All Room Parent registrations must be submitted by Wednesday, September 12. Curious about what a Room Parent does? Follow this link to find out more.

We are off to a great start with our new dismissal system.  If you have not already done so, please download the app School Dismissal Manager.  Having everyone complete this will most definitely help us conduct a safe and efficient dismissal each and every day.  We encourage you to please log in and get familiar with the new system.  Additionally, you can record absences, tardies, or early dismissals in School Dismissal Manager.
Dale Street School will have a Patriots Spirit Day on Friday, September 7th to support the Patriots as they take on the Texans in their first game of the season.  Staff and students are encouraged to come to school in their Patriots attire or attire that supports their favorite football team.

As always, participation in spirit days is voluntary.
