May 18, 2018 - Week 35

Greetings Dale Street Community!

Thank you to the PTO and all of the volunteers who treated the Dale Street staff to a delicious staff appreciation luncheon on Wednesday.  It was absolutely delicious and we can't thank you enough for your generosity.

Thank you to all the former students and families for sending your notes and messages, coming to the surprise party for Mrs. Curran, and being part of Mrs. Curran's retirement. She loved seeing everyone and was so touched by your presence! A fantastic tribute to an AMAZING person!

Other than a few make-ups, Dale Street fourth and fifth grade students have completed the 2018 MCAS testing.  I am so proud of the outstanding effort our students gave to the ELA, Math, and STE (Grade 5) test sessions.  These tests are challenging, but Dale Street students demonstrated perseverance and positivity throughout all the sessions.  We try not to over-emphasize the test (it's stressful enough as it is) or let it take over the entire school. However, we appreciate the hard work our students do each day and look forward to seeing how they perform and what it can tell us about our programming.

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referrals!  These students truly exemplify what Dale Street stands for!  Way to go!

The next Principal's Coffee will be held on Thursday, May 24th at 8:45 a.m. in the Dale Street School cafeteria. Our psychologist, Elisabeth Strekalovsky, and Guidance Counselor, Lindsey Warner, will be leading a discussion regarding Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Please RSVP if you are planning to attend.

On a visit to Ms. Bertschmann fifth grade class on Thursday students used collaboration and coordinate planes to solve a real-world gardening problem.  Well done 5B!

One Community, One Theme!

Join the Medfield Public Schools & the Medfield Public Library as we celebrate the theme of LOVE to kick off the 2018-19 school year. We are thrilled to announce the K-12 joint initiative by sharing the book Love by Matt de la Peña and look forward to a visit by this Newbery award winning author in March, 2019. There will be an assembly for K-5 in the next few weeks to explain the program and the summer challenge. If you wish to purchase a copy of the book Love, Jim James of Park Street Books will donate a percentage of the sale back to the schools. Please complete the order form and return to school no later than

June 1, 2018.

Thanks to Sam in Ms. Isaacson's class for reading today's book recommendation. Sam recommended Smart Cookie by Elly Swartz for "people who love realistic fiction books" and because "it's really funny."  Sam rated this book 5 out of 5 stars!  Thanks Sam!

    Juice-Large and boxes
    Kid Friendly Cereal
    Cookies/Crackers
    PB
    Jam/Jelly
    Canned Fruit
    Spaghetti

There will be a collection bin in each classroom.  We hope you can contribute by donating to the Medfield Food Cupboard and join us in helping others.
  • This week, students in Mrs. Scott's fourth grade class created infographics for the books they are reading in class. The creativity of these students is fantastic!

  • School Supply Kits 2018-2019
It doesn’t seem possible that we would need to start thinking about next school year already but now is the time to order your school kits from 1st Day School Supplies!  This is our first year using this company and they were selected because of their great customer service and guarantee of brand name, high quality items.  Most other companies substitute generic supplies to cut costs, but 1st Day will provide the teachers and your students with top quality products that will help them thrive next year.  Also, this PTO fundraiser further helps our students and teachers by supporting the great work our PTO continues to do!
1st Day School Supplies is also offering Under Armour, Vera Bradley and Jansport backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles as well.  Proceeds from these items also benefit the PTO’s fundraising efforts.  Any of these accessory items will be delivered before the first day of school so your student will be equipped with their new gear when they get on the bus.
Grades K-5 have submitted their supply lists and 1st Day is ready to take this summer "to do" item off your list early.  Enjoy every minute of this summer knowing your child’s supplies will be delivered to their classroom and be waiting for them on their first day.
    Three Easy Steps:
    1.        Go to www.1stDaySchoolSupplies.com
    2.       Type in the Medfield zip code:  02052
    3.       Find your school/grade/kit and pay online.
If you have any questions, please email jodibills30@yahoo.com
Please mark your calendars for the Grade 5 Celebration! The celebration will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 9:30 am in the Dale Street School gymnasium. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dale Street students will be honoring our veterans and those currently serving our country through music and remarks on Friday, May 25th. The program will be held outside (weather permitting) on the Dale Street side of the building.  The program will begin at 8:50 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 30 minutes.  Upon completion of the program, students will return with their teachers to their classrooms.

Summer Skills Book
Many students have found it beneficial to work on strengthening math and/or language arts skills over the summer months.  For many years we have used a series of workbooks published by a company called Summer Skills.  These books have been successful in helping students practice and sharpen their skills.  Please be aware that some questions contained in the workbooks may cover topics that have been introduced but not yet mastered.  As a school, we feel that summer work is beneficial, as studies show that much of what is learned during the school year is lost over the summer months; however, this book is entirely OPTIONAL.
