May 11, 2018 - Week 34

Dear Dale Street Families,

Dale Street Teacher/Nurse Appreciation!
Please join me in thanking the fabulous teachers and school nurse we have here at Dale Street.  I feel very proud and privileged to work every day with the most caring, intelligent, and dedicated staff.  They blow me away with all the things they do for our students every single day.

A variety of excellent artwork was on display on Tuesday night at the Dale Street Art Show.  Special thanks to our incredible students and our wonderful art teacher, Mrs. Delaney for creating such a wonderful environment!

Please join us on as we celebrate our final spirit day of the 2017-2018 school year.  From Monday, May 21st to Friday, June 1st, the Dale Street School will be collecting items to donate to the Medfield Food Cupboard.  Items we will be collecting are:

Juice-Large and boxes
Kid Friendly Cereal
Cookies/Crackers
PB
Jam/Jelly
Canned Fruit
Spaghetti

There will be a collection bin in each classroom.  We hope you can contribute by donating to the Medfield Food Cupboard and join us in helping others.

Do you know how light travels?  The students in Mrs. Crable's fourth grade class worked collaboratively to figure it out this week.  #awesomescientists

Thanks to Greta in Ms. Condon's class for reading today's book recommendation. Greta recommended The Stone Heart by Charlie Fletcher for "people who enjoy adventure" and because "it is a great sequel to the Nameless City, is a cliff hanger so you'll want to read more."  Greta rated this book 6 out of 5 stars!  Thanks Greta!
Summer Skills Book
Many students have found it beneficial to work on strengthening math and/or language arts skills over the summer months.  For many years we have used a series of workbooks published by a company called Summer Skills.  These books have been successful in helping students practice and sharpen their skills.  Please be aware that some questions contained in the workbooks may cover topics that have been introduced but not yet mastered.  As a school, we feel that summer work is beneficial, as studies show that much of what is learned during the school year is lost over the summer months; however, this book is entirely OPTIONAL.

Tickets for the MCPE Fall Ball "A Golden Ticket to Imagination" go on sale to the public in May 20th at 9am via our website www.medfieldcoalition.org. We'll see you at the ball on November 3rd!

The public is also welcome to join us for our annual meeting on May 24th at 7pm at the Zullo Gallery. We will recognize an outstanding teacher, an outstanding grant for this year and also vote in our new board. We hope you can join us!

Mrs. Scott's fourth grade classroom used our awesome LMC while participating in reader's workshop on Tuesday.  I really wish the library at my elementary school looked like this.  A huge thank you to our very generous MCPE for funding much of this phenomenal space.

Happy Nurses Week to Mrs. Thompson!

One of our wonderful music teachers, Mr. Dexter noticed this week that his flute was missing from where it is usually stored in the lesson area in the hallway outside the gym. This is his personally owned instrument and not a school owned instrument. I'm asking if you would please take a minute to check in with your child to see if they mistakenly brought it home or have seen or heard anything. I've attached a picture as it's somewhat unique compared to the flutes that most of the students are using. It's a professional model Jupiter, open-hole, sterling silver flute.

Check out the PTO update, including lots of exciting information including these upcoming events:

School Supply Kits 2018-2019
It doesn’t seem possible that we would need to start thinking about next school year already but now is the time to order your school kits from 1st Day School Supplies!  This is our first year using this company and they were selected because of their great customer service and guarantee of brand name, high quality items.  Most other companies substitute generic supplies to cut costs, but 1st Day will provide the teachers and your students with top quality products that will help them thrive next year.  Also, this PTO fundraiser further helps our students and teachers by supporting the great work our PTO continues to do!
1st Day School Supplies is also offering Under Armour, Vera Bradley and Jansport backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles as well.  Proceeds from these items also benefit the PTO’s fundraising efforts.  Any of these accessory items will be delivered before the first day of school so your student will be equipped with their new gear when they get on the bus.
Grades K-5 have submitted their supply lists and 1st Day is ready to take this summer "to do" item off your list early.  Enjoy every minute of this summer knowing your child’s supplies will be delivered to their classroom and be waiting for them on their first day.
Three Easy Steps:
1.        Go to www.1stDaySchoolSupplies.com
2.       Type in the Medfield zip code:  02052
3.       Find your school/grade/kit and pay online.
If you have any questions, please email jodibills30@yahoo.com

This week students in Mrs. Lowerre's fifth grade class enjoyed watching "live" from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  They saw sea otters and penguins being fed as well as otters sunning on the beach.  What a great connection to their lesson about the kelp forest and food webs.

Zoe Lewis, Olivia Price and Kim Price are organizing the PMC kids ride in Medfield! The ride will be held on June 9, 2018 looping through the Medfield High School and Blake Middle School.  This year our ride will be held for kids in grades K-8 and they will have a chance to ride their bikes for a good cause. The Kids PMC strives to get young cyclists interested into raising money for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In addition to promoting fitness and physical activity, the program engages youth in charity work and teaches them values of working to benefit others. We, along with many others, have a loved one that has been diagnosed with cancer. We want to support the PMC’s mission of making a change and to start this adventure by bringing the PMC Kids Ride back to Medfield, with the support of our friends,  family, and young riders and volunteers like you. Please join us on June 9th for the Medfield Kids PMC Ride. Check-in starts at 10:00 am and the ride will begin at 11:00 am. The riders have one hour to complete as many loops around the course as they can or want to. Stick around for activities and family fun after the ride! For more information about the ride, registration and volunteering, please visit the Medfield PMC Kids Ride website: kids.pmc.org/Medfield  Thank You!

On behalf of all of the employees at Dale Street, I would like to wish all of the mothers and grandmothers a Happy Mother's Day.

Steve
