December 8, 2017 - Week 15

Greetings Dale Street Families,

What an AMAZING week here at #beproudbedale!  This week really highlights Dale Street's continuous effort to educate the whole child.  Take a peek.....

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for the first Positive Referral breakfast of the 2017-2018 school year.  The Food Service department provided coffee, juice, and a variety of delicious treats for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to them for all of their hard work organizing this event.  Lastly, a huge thank you to all of the students who continue to demonstrate outstanding character.  We are so proud of you for making such great choices each and every day!

Bravo to the Dale Street Bands!  Last night our fourth and fifth grades bands performed for their family and guests.  The music was superb and all of the attendees enjoyed the performance.  Thank you to Mr. Dexter and Mr. Murphy for their outstanding leadership.

Check out the latest edition of Dale Street Times!

The Dale Street School is currently participating in Hour of Code.  In the past, we have all completed Hour of Code activities on the same day and at the same time.  In an effort to model our Core Value of continuous growth, all classrooms will have the opportunity to individually visit the #beproudbedale makerspace and collaborate with Mrs. Cowell to participate in a variety of coding stations.  There has been many classrooms that have had the chance to visit the LMC this week and the feedback has been terrific!  All classrooms will have the chance to participate by the time winter vacation arrives.   Take a look at some of talented young learners.....

In Mrs. Scott's fourth grade classroom, students used time in math workshop to get a deeper understanding of partial quotients.  Great work!

Thanks to Alec in Ms. MacDonald's class for reading today's book recommendation.  Alec recommended Hilo by Judd Winick for "people who like comics" because "it is really interesting because this kid crashes from the sky and he's saving the world from evil robots!"  Alec rated this book 5 stars!  Thanks Alec!

Congratulations to December's "Lucky Plate" winners.  These students received a Medfield water bottle.

I had the great fortune to co-teach a CueThink lesson with Mrs. Lowerre today.  Students worked collaboratively to understand, plan, solve and review some pretty tricky math problems.  Wow, these young learners are incredible!

On Sunday, December 10th, the Medfield SEPAC is hosting a pottery event at Park Street Books.  The event is open to all Medfield families.  Please see the event particulars here

Within their Earth and Sun FOSS unit, Mrs. Foley's students are currently exploring why stars appear to move across the night sky and why they see different constellations at different times of the year. Students are using interactive activities, videos, and demonstrations to help guide their understanding.  So cool!

Term 1 Report Cards

On Wednesday, 12/13 students will bring home their report cards for the first term.  If you have any questions about your child's work or the report card, please start by having a conversation with your child.  If questions still exist, please contact the teacher directly to gain more insight.

Over the past few weeks, staff here at Dale Street have noticed an uptick in the number of students having cell phones.  Please note that our Elementary Handbook specifically states that students should "Not be in possession of any electronic devices including cell phones, iPods, handhelds,

Nintendo DS, Kindles, etc."  We thank you in advance for your continued support.

Check out the PTO update with information about the Teacher Luncheon (12/11), Movie on the 1/2 Day (12/12), Grade 5 yearbooks, fundraisers and more!

Congratulations to these Dale Street students and their families for winning these awesome PTO raffles from last Monday's Holiday Book Fair at Park Street Books.  One of the prizes....makerspace time with Mrs. Cowell.

The Student Advisory Council initiated the idea of creating holiday cards for individuals in the military, residents of the Thomas Upham House, and patients at Children's Hospital.  Dale Street students are encouraged to create cards for one, two, or all three of these groups.  Students may create as many cards as they wish.  The specifics for the cards are:
*Written on 8 1/2 x 11 paper
*Just include first name (no personal information)
*Some possible ideas: draw holiday items, thank you for your service, get well soon, stay strong, stay safe, happy holidays, happy New Year
*Students can make more than one card if they want
*Cards are due back to school by Friday, December 15th

Participation is voluntary.

As a reminder, next Tuesday, 12/12 will be an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:40 a.m.  Staff will be involved in professional development focused on the new Next Generation Science Standards.
As always, thank you for reading.  Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Steve
