January 8, 2020 - Week 14

Dear Dale Street ~

Happy New Year to all of the Dale Street Community!  Unfortunately, this was an unforgettable week for all the wrong reasons.  The staff at Dale Street promises all of our students and families that we will remain committed to modeling our Core Values each day.  Please take a minute to look at the amazing things that our Dale Street Rockstars accomplished this week.  They are AWESOME!

Congratulations to Hamilton and Ben for receiving positive referrals this week.  Both students were recognized for showing compassion for other students. Way to go!

Our Student Council initiative to support local restaurants during the pandemic continues!  Each week, 2 restaurants will be sponsored by the Dale Street Student Council and their classmates.  Be sure to help our local restaurants!  Our sponsored restaurants next week are Cutlets (Ms. Isaacson's class) and Royal Pizza (Ms. McKenzie's class).

Cutlets...One fantastic restaurant! Be sure to stop in for amazing prepared meals, sandwiches, and many gluten-free options. Some of our favorite foods are the Italian sub, sausage and peppers, and the meatballs! Customers love the chicken parmesan, so you should try it!
Cutlets is open on Monday from 10am-6pm, Tuesday from 10am-3pm, Wednesday through Friday from 10am-6pm, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you can't stop in, call 508-359-9000 to place your order. Hope to see you there!!

There's a lot of pizza choices in Medfield but you can't go wrong with Royal Pizza! They have pizza, subs, dinner platters, and salads all at affordable prices! At Royal Pizza, they make their pizza with 100% real cheese and the lowest prices in town! They are open from 11 am-9pm from Mondays to Thursdays but open from 11 am-10pm on Fridays and Saturdays but closed on Sundays! Tired of having to drive all the way to get your food? Guess what? Royale Pizza delivers! They have delivery, take out, and dine in for all your eating experiences! Visit Royal Pizza at royalpizzamedfield.com and call them at (508) 359-2424! Go to Royal Pizza!

The Dale Street Math Challenge is back!

We are very excited that all 4th and 5th-grade students have the opportunity to complete biweekly math challenges. Math challenges will be available to print at home from the website linked below.

Students will be free to solve as many problems as they can and will have about a week to turn in their work. Students can hand in a hard copy of the challenge to the office or email it to Mrs. Perachi (bperachi@email.medfield.net) prior to the due date. We hope that all students and families find these problems to be a challenging and fun activity.

More information, including a calendar of important dates and a link to download and print the challenges and solutions, is available here. Questions regarding the math challenge program can be directed to Dale Street math specialist, Mrs. Perachi.

The next challenge is due by January 21st.

On a visit to the LMC this week, I got to see Grade 4 students engaged in a project-based learning activity: Flood Barrier Needed!  Students were asked to build a flood barrier to protect Ms. Plympton's dog, Moose's dog house.  The problem: Ms. Plympton lives by a long, winding river. There has been crazy amounts of rain over the past few days and the drains are being overworked. Some of the drains are even clogged with leaves.  Students had to run an experiment and determine what materials were most/least successful.  These students are amazing!

I had a blast playing a game called buckets (similar to Cornhole) with students in Ms. MacDonnell's grade 4 students.  I am so impressed with Dale Street Physical Education teacher, Mrs. Nawrocki and her ability to create such great PE activities for our students.

I am excited to share with you an opportunity made possible by the generosity of a grant from MCPE. On January 11, 2021, Sarah Ward will be coming back to Medfield to present on executive functioning, particularly focusing on strategies to support students, staff, and families in our current hybrid learning environment.

Community event: 1/11/21 7-8:30pm (if needed: Passcode: 289306)

Students may bring lunch from home or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. Lunch is prepared by our cafeteria staff and is delivered to the classrooms.  Meals prepared in the cafeteria will be free to all students for the 2020-2021 school year.  Families will still need to complete the free & reduced lunch application

Students in Mrs. Fox's and Mrs. Flynne's Grade 4 classes took time this week to learn about the Great Galveston Hurricane.  Students used this nonfiction text to work on comprehension skills as well as looking at something from someone else's perspective.  Bravo, young learners!

Feeling stressed, down or anxious? Need to talk to someone about it?  Medfield Outreach is offering drop-in hours.  Check out this flyer for details.

Special thanks to our amazingly generous PTO for funding our new recess bags.  The students were over the moon to use this equipment this week!

You are invited to join the Medfield Cares About Prevention Community Coalition and help us make change in the Medfield community. To learn more about how to get involved, email Meri Haas at mhaas@medfield.net.

Today, Ms. Slachta's fourth-grade students became surgeons.  During their ELA lesson, students were assigned to help 'patients' understand what text feature they would need to be cured.  After they 'sanitized all of the operating materials' - they got down to work.  What a fun and informative learning activity!

Winter is here!  Please make sure your children come to school dressed appropriately for the cold weather.  Students will have recess OUTSIDE if the 'feels like' temperature is 20 or above.  Hats, gloves, and coats are strongly encouraged.  Additionally, students need to have snow boots and snow pants if they want to play in the snow.  Students without snow gear will have to remain on the blacktop.

This week, students in Ms. Isaacson's Grade 4 class took time to take a deeper dive into interpreting remainders.  What a great way to get a deeper conceptual understanding of numbers and what they mean.  Ask your fourth grader what it means to ignore the remainder, split up the remainder, add the remainder to a group, or see the remainder as the answer?
