November 6, 2020 - Week 8

Hello Dale Street Families,

We just completed another fantastic week at #beproudbedale and I continue to be very proud of our students and staff.  Here are some snapshots from the week along with some important information regarding upcoming events/dates.

Today, Cohort B celebrated Patriots spirit day.  Check out some of these pictures.  Hoping that students' and staff's enthusiasm brings the home team some luck.  Cohorts A and D will celebrate Patriots spirit day on Monday, November 9th.

Congratulations to our Positive Referrals this week.  Bridget, from Mrs. Fox's fourth-grade class and Bash, from Ms. Johnson's fifth-grade class, were both nominated for exemplifying compassion.  Madeleine, from Ms. MacDonnell's fourth-grade class, was nominated for encouraging our core value of Continuous Growth.  Way to go, Bridget, Bash, and Madeleine!

Congratulations to William in Mrs. Chamblin's fifth-grade class! He was the Dale Street Pumpkin Contest winner! The actual weight of the pumpkin was 19.6 pounds. Way to go, William!

Students may bring lunch from home or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. Lunch is prepared by our cafeteria staff and is delivered to the classrooms.  Meals prepared in the cafeteria will be free to all students for the 2020-2021 school year.  Families will still need to complete the free & reduced lunch application

Our Medfield Public School teachers and staff are working tirelessly to ensure our children's safety, social-emotional health, educational progress, and happiness. Together, the K-8 PTO, High School PTO, and MCPE are excited to launch the Heroes Under the Mask Campaign which celebrates the positive experiences that go above and beyond the normal role of teachers, staff, and administrators. This is your chance to recognize all the little and big things they are doing to make this unsettled time purposeful!  Please take a moment to share the positive experiences your family is experiencing during this time by nominating a hero using the Heroes Under the Mask Nomination Form. Nominations will be shared publicly so that we can celebrate the positive efforts as a community.

Check out this awesome nomination for Jess Mulligan!

On a visit to Ms. Hayes' fourth-grade synchronous lesson on Wednesday, students used the area model strategy to practice multiplying multi-digit numbers.  They followed this up with a pretty neat elimination game.

Medfield Outreach has extended their weekly drop-in mental health hours through November.  Please check out this flyer for more information.

Students in Ms. MacDonnell's fourth-grade class recently reached a classroom incentive.  Their reward...'Glow in the Dark Day' for each Cohort.  Congratulations, Rockstars!

Picture Retake Day

Tuesday, Nov 17 - Cohort A

Thursday, Nov 19 - Cohort B

This week, students in Ms. Isaacson's class worked with Dale Street Math Specialist, Mrs. Perachi and used arrays to solve multi-digit multiplication equations.  Students submitted their answers into a Nearpod for their Ms. Isaacson and Mrs. Perachi to see.  The final slide was a virtual tour of a hockey arena where students looked for real-life examples of area and perimeter.

Check out the PTO update for this week which includes information on the annual funding drive, ongoing fundraisers, and more!

Just a few weeks left to log your 20.52 miles as part of the One Medfield Moves Challenge! Remember to post your pictures on social media with #OneMedfield to be entered into our weekly drawing!

This week in World Language class with Mrs. Song students worked on telling time in Mandarin.  Students worked on reading how to say time and played a fun game on Kahoot to reinforce this skill.

The Medfield Cares About Prevention (MCAP) community coalition has the goal of reducing youth substance use and improving the health and wellbeing of Medfield youth. Rates of youth substance use in Medfield are higher than the rest of the MetroWest region. For example, according to the 2018 MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey, 41.7% of Medfield High School students used alcohol in the past 30 days, compared to 27.7% of high school students in the MetroWest region overall. Medfield rates of high school youth alcohol use are 1.5x higher than the regional rates of youth use. Additionally, a large percentage of the Medfield youth who drank alcohol within the last 30 days gained access to it at home with parent or guardian knowledge (14% of 9-12th graders and 48% of the 2.5% of 7-8th graders who drank alcohol within the last 30 days). During the month of November, the MCAP coalition, in partnership with the Medfield Police, is implementing a “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most” campaign in order to increase awareness and reduce underage drinking. We ask you to join us, along with other local community organizations, agencies, and businesses, in this effort!

This week, Grade 5 students in Mrs. Ross' and Mrs. Seaver's class, Mrs. Hayes' Grade 5 class, and Grade 5 students in Ms. Johnson's class were all hard at work during writer's workshop.  Students took time to revise their drafts while going back into their stories, adding sensory details to the setting - making sure they touched upon their 5 senses.  Bravo!

Patriots Spirit Day!

Dale Street School will have a Patriots Spirit Day on Monday, November 9th.  Staff and students are encouraged to come to school in their Patriots attire or attire that supports their favorite football team.

As always, participation in spirit days is voluntary.

Beginning Thursday, Nov 12, our students will be beginning Session 1 rotation of their specials.  Grade 4 students will have Health and World Language.  Grade 5 students will have Art and PE.

Today, with the help of Dale Street Math Specialist, Mrs. Perachi, Grade 5 students in Ms. McKenzie's class made the outdoors their classroom as they participated in a math scavenger hunt.  Awesome!

5th Grade Band Olympics

In October, the 5th-grade band students started participating in their first band Olympic events. The students are divided into musical countries based on their instrument and compete in weekly competitions for bronze, silver, and gold medals. The events are designed to challenge their abilities in instrument technique, performance, and musical knowledge. The events range from video submissions, online quizzes, and SmartMusic assignments. With each event, countries are scored based on the performance average of the section. At the end of the month, participating members of each country that earns the most points (from medal rankings) will get to pick out one prize from the themed treasure box.

Countries:
The United Nation of Treble Clef (Flutes)
The Chromatic Kingdom of Reeds (Clarinets & Oboes)
The People’s Republic of Fermata (Saxophones)
The Noted Empire Of Dynamica (Trumpets/Horn)
The Provinces of Forte (Trombones/Percussion)

October Events:
Week 1: Practice Record Relay
Week 2: 5-Note Scale Race
Week 3: Long Tone Long Jump (Winds only)
Week 3: Paradiddle Luge (Percussion only)

October Winners
The Chromatic Kingdom of Reeds (Clarinets & Oboes) - 2 Gold Medals
Students: Lewis B., Melis E., Miles H., Lilith M., Ben S., Paige U., Maverick M., and Finn P.

We will be holding virtual parent-teacher conferences this year on Thursday, December 10th from 12-3:30 p.m., and Tuesday, December 15th from 12:00-3:30 p.m. Teachers will be sending out letters about how to sign up in a couple of weeks.

Remember, Wednesday, November 11th, is Veterans Day.
There is no school on this day.
To the Veterans out there, thank you for your service!

That’s all for this week.  Have a great weekend!

Best, Steve

Respect * Compassion * Collaboration * Continuous Growth
