October 9, 2020 - Week 4

Hello Dale Street Community,

To start the week, students in Ms. MacDonnell's Grade 4 classroom collaborated as they made scientific observations while working on chemical changes.   Well done!

Wheelock principal, Mrs. Caulfield and I will be hosting a Google Classroom/Learning Expectations webinar on Tuesday, October 13th at 5:00 p.m.  This webinar will be recorded for individuals who may not be available on 10/13 at 5:00 p.m.  Here is the information for the webinar:

Inktober is a month-long art challenge that happens each October. The challenge for students is to focus on improving drawing skills and habits. Each day comes with a drawing prompt to try. Here is the link to the drawing prompts for 2020. If students would like to participate they can post their drawing to our stream in the Google Art Classroom.  It is so awesome to see what our amazing students create!

Schedule Clarification

On Wednesdays, students have in-person synchronous classes from 9:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. with a lunch and recess break from 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and an independent work session from 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Students should use the time on Wednesday afternoons to complete a Specialists' choice activity, work on assignments given that morning, work on long term projects, and/or get caught up on assignments from earlier in the week.

Please check out this flyer from Medfield Outreach about weekly drop-in mental health hours during the month of October.

On Wednesday, students in Mrs. Chamblin's fifth-grade class participated in small group math work, made their student council speeches, shared their writing collages, and played cohort feud.  Although being in school is the best for sure, students did a wonderful job and had a lot of fun at the same time!

Students may bring a lunch from home or purchase a meal from the cafeteria. Lunch is prepared by our cafeteria staff and is delivered to the classrooms.  Meals prepared in the cafeteria will be free to all students through December 31st. We are encouraging families to fill in the free & reduced lunch application for when the waiver expires on Dec. 31, 2020.

I have had the best time visiting classrooms and reading the book Back to Zero by Dr. Joy.  It is great to converse with the students and highlighting the importance of developing strategies for coping with challenges.  Some days are not easy, especially in our current situation.  Sharing this book and talking about the importance of how we respond to challenges has been very rewarding.

Instead of the traditional Parent Information Night (PIN) in Medfield this year we will be doing a virtual meet the staff presentation.  On October 16th, I will be sending out a virtual slide deck link of pre-recorded presentation from each staff member at # beproudbedale introducing themselves and sharing a little bit about them.  Classroom teachers and Special Subject teachers will also outline the curriculum and expectations for the content students are working with here at Dale Street.  This will be done asyncronously so families can view it at a time that is convenient for them or view it in smaller chunks.

During in-person learning this week, students in Mrs. Ross' and Mrs. Seaver's fifth grade class worked on ordering, comparing, and rounding decimals.  I'm not sure about you, but I can definitely see the smile on this #beproudbedale Rockstar's face!

If your child is going to miss a day of school either remotely or in-person, please call the attendance line ( 508-359-5538 - option #1). When leaving the message, please indicate if your child is remote or in-person on that day.

Please be aware that if your child is scheduled to be in school on a given day but is at home instead, the student will be marked 'Absent' even if the student is engaged virtually.

If your child is working remotely and misses their morning Zoom it is important that you call the main office so that we can change their attendance from absent to tardy.

Please note, that is a child is scheduled to be in person and is unable to come to school they are considered absent. We do not have the ability to make them remote for a single day (a student being quarantined or diagnosed with Covid-19 for a lengthy period would be treated differently). Similar to a student being absent during a typical school year, the student should access their Google classroom for any posted assignments or families can contact the teacher to arrange a time to pick up missed work at school.

On Thursday, students in Ms. Hayes' fourth grade class had fun while working on subtractin and comparing numbers.

Reminder: There will be no school on Monday, Oct 12, in observance of Columbus Day.

I hope everyone has a wonderful three day weekend.  Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Best,

Steve
