November 2, 2018 - Week 10

Hello Dale Street!

The Red Sox won the World Series, a Patriots win, Halloween, and a lot of awesome student activities = another fantastic week!  Scroll through to take a look....

Thank you to all the students, the families, and the staff for supporting our first Spirit Day of the year.  We collected a lot of items for the Medfield Food Cupboard!  In addition.....we had some fun with PJ Day!

It was a pleasure to meet with parents on Thursday at the first Principal's Coffee of the school year. The topics of discussion were the recently released MCAS data, the upcoming parent/teacher conferences, our enrichment math program, and our new School Dismissal Manager.  Thank you to all who were able to attend and to the food service staff who provided coffee and snacks. If you were not able to attend, the Google Slides from the presentation can be found on the Dale Street website. The next coffee will be held on March 8th. I hope to see you there.

Thanks to Joseph in Mrs. Scott's class for reading today's book recommendation.  Joseph recommended The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis for "someone who reads Narnia books."  Joseph rated this book 'a million stars'  Thanks Joseph!

Mrs. Scott's fourth grade classroom took our PTO funded Walking Classrooms for a spin this week.  Students listened to a student-led podcast highlighting word choice as a support to their writing unit.

In World Language this week, Mrs. LeVangie's Spanish classes celebrated El Día de los Muertos with a digital breakout! ¡Escapamos!

Check out the PTO update with information about fundraisers, Kids' Night Out, and Spirit wear  Arriving in time for the holidays, check out our Spirit Wear Shop and help support the Winter Carnival! Ms. Warner and Mrs. Strekalovsky continued their guidance lessons this week.  Mr. Douglas' students enjoyed a lesson on empathy.

Dale Street students and staff kicked off Global Giving month this morning with this AMAZING student-created video. This video (shown in each classroom) will hopefully inspire students and families to get involved in our school-wide effort to assist Coalition for Courage. Next Week
Pennies for a Purpose/ Silver Sabotage
 Monday, November 5-Friday, November 9.

This is a friendly competition between grades. Before depositing money in the collection bins, students should separate pennies from all other coins or bills. Students put pennies in their grade's bin, as pennies earn one point for the grade.  All other coins and bills go in the other grade's bin as they count for sabotage. All silver coins and bills equal their value. For example, a quarter subtracts 25 points and a $5.00 subtracts 500 points.

Congratulations to our phenomenal reading specialists Mrs. Callahan and Mrs. Bassett for being asked to present at the recent Literacy for All Conference!  We are lucky to have you!
We are very excited to announce that all 4th and 5th grade students now have an opportunity to complete biweekly math challenges. The first challenge was sent home with students this week. Future challenges will be available to print at home from the website linked below.
Students are free to solve as many problems as they can and will have about a week to turn their work in. We hope that all students and families find these problems to be a challenging, but fun activity.

More information, including a calendar of important dates and a link to download and print the challenges and solutions, is available at http://www.mathinaction.org/dale-st-school.html. Questions regarding the math challenge program can be directed to the math specialist, Alison Wells, at awells@email.medfield.net or me.

On Wednesday, Grade 4 classrooms were involved in 'Pumpkin Math'.  Thank you to all the parents who came in to assist in the classrooms.  We were (and always are) happy to have you!

Mr. Mason's fifth grade class used the site CueTHINK to answer challenging math word problems. Students followed the process of understand, plan, solve, and review to tackle these high level problems.
