June 1, 2018 - Week 37

Happy Friday Dale Street Community,

We celebrated our last Positive Referral breakfast of the year this morning. Thank you to all of the families who attended and special thanks to our cafeteria staff for providing the delicious refreshments. Congratulations to all of the Positive Referrals who attended the breakfast and congratulations to all who earned a Positive Referral this year!

Thanks to Milena in Ms. Bertschmann's class for reading today's book recommendation. Milena recommended The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin for "people that like mysteries" and because "it has intense parts, exciting parts, and happy parts."  Milena rated this book 5 out of 5 stars!  Thanks Milena!

As a culmination to our Term III Spirit Day collection for the Medfield Food Cupboard, Dale Street doors were decorated by the classrooms - complete with kindness notes for every student! I am so proud of all of the students.  Please take a minute and ask you child what they wrote to someone else and what was written about them.

I have had the great pleasure over the past few weeks to visit all the classrooms and read Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson.  It is so great to visit all the classrooms, dialogue with students, and share this wonderful message!

On Wednesday, Blake Middle School Principal, Mr. Vaughn and Assistant Principal, Mrs. Campbell visited our fifth graders to share important information and good advice about Blake Middle School.

Congratulations to this week's Positive Referrals!  Thank you for making Dale Street such a great place!

Today we celebrated our phenomenal Instructional Assistants for all that they do to make Dale Street so great!  I don't know what we would do without them!
On Thursday, graduating seniors from Medfield High School visited Dale Street to walk the halls and receive cheers and high fives from our students.  The students and staff really liked seeing the 'big kids.' Good luck Seniors!

Today, students in Mrs. Lowerre's grade 5 class launched a STEM activity.  Students will work in teams to collaborate on a 'Boat Design Challenge.'  Students will move to the design phase next Monday and build on Friday.  I can't wait to see the models and how they perform.

Dale Street fourth graders had a wonderful time on their field trip to the Museum of Science this week. Thanks to all of the parents who took time to chaperone.

Field Day is scheduled for Thursday June 7th (Rain Day, Friday, June 8th).  Mr. Stevens and Mrs. Carey are planning an exciting day of activities for our 4th and 5th graders.  Grade 4 will participate in Field Day during the morning (9:00 - 11:15) and Grade 5 will participate in the afternoon (12:00 - 2:15)Both field days will begin with the 50 yard dash and an all class relay. Field Day will take place on the field between the Dale Street and Memorial Schools. After the races, classes will begin rotating through six stations. Classes will rotate with their classroom. All activities will take place on the field, in the gym and on the blacktop.  Parents are welcome to join us to watch and cheer on their children.

We have found it to be helpful to
**have students wear comfortable clothes and sneakers on this day
**apply sunscreen before coming to school.  Please provide more sunscreen for re- application.
**send children with a hat and extra water on this day.

Classes will be eating bagged lunches. Students may bring their own bagged lunch or purchase a bagged lunch from the cafeteria. Note: There will no other lunch options on this day.

Dale Street hosted a Parent Information Night for incoming 4th Grade parents/guardians on Wednesday evening.  We shared this 'day in the life' video, held breakout sessions, and walked the halls with parents/guardians.  It was a great opportunity to meet our future families!

Check out the PTO update with information about ordering school supply kits for the 2018-2019 school year and more.

  • School Supply Kits 2018-2019
It doesn’t seem possible that we would need to start thinking about next school year already but now is the time to order your school kits from 1st Day School Supplies!  This is our first year using this company and they were selected because of their great customer service and guarantee of brand name, high quality items.  Most other companies substitute generic supplies to cut costs, but 1st Day will provide the teachers and your students with top quality products that will help them thrive next year.  Also, this PTO fundraiser further helps our students and teachers by supporting the great work our PTO continues to do!
1st Day School Supplies is also offering Under Armour, Vera Bradley and Jansport backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles as well.  Proceeds from these items also benefit the PTO’s fundraising efforts.  Any of these accessory items will be delivered before the first day of school so your student will be equipped with their new gear when they get on the bus.
Grades K-5 have submitted their supply lists and 1st Day is ready to take this summer "to do" item off your list early.  Enjoy every minute of this summer knowing your child’s supplies will be delivered to their classroom and be waiting for them on their first day.
    Three Easy Steps:
    1.        Go to www.1stDaySchoolSupplies.com
    2.       Type in the Medfield zip code:  02052

Summer Skills Book

Many students have found it beneficial to work on strengthening math and/or language arts skills over the summer months.  For many years we have used a series of workbooks published by a company called Summer Skills.  These books have been successful in helping students practice and sharpen their skills.  Please be aware that some questions contained in the workbooks may cover topics that have been introduced but not yet mastered.  As a school, we feel that summer work is beneficial, as studies show that much of what is learned during the school year is lost over the summer months; however, this book is entirely OPTIONAL.

Please click here for more information.

Don't forget to check the lost and found for any missing sweatshirts, hats, water bottles, etc.  All unclaimed items will be donated to charity on the last day of school.

If you know that your child will not be attending Medfield Public Schools for the next school year, please let the office know for the placement process.

Transition day will be held on Friday, June 15th.  Children will spend approximately 30 minutes in their new teacher's classroom, get a chance to meet their new classmates, and hear a little about what's to come next year.

Thank you for checking in this week.  Enjoy your weekend!

Steve
