March 5, 2021 - Week 21

Happy Friday Dale Street Families,

What a fantastic week here at #beproudbedale!  This week's blog is jammed packed full of awesomeness and contains helpful information and dates for our students and families.  Take a peek.....

Dale Street's 'Spring Forward' PTO-sponsored classroom door decorating contest is in full swing.  Classrooms used some indoor recess and snack time this week to start to design what their door will look like.  Voting will begin on March 15th and one 4th grade classroom and one fifth grade classroom will be crowned the champion on March 19th!  Good luck everyone!

Congratulations to Claire on her Positive Referral for demonstrating Dale Street's Core Values.  Way to go!

Dale Street participated in a variety of activities this week to celebrate Read Across America Week.  Library Media Specialist, Ms. Sweeney created a series of read alouds students could listen to each day.  The catch, the reader did not reveal their face until the end.  If you would like to see the readers and listen to the books they chose, click here.

As part of Dale Street's celebration of Read Across America, we will begin the 2021 Tournament of Books competition in the next few weeks.  This year's theme: 'The World Around Us.'  Happy Reading!

Books:
  • Milo Imagines the World by Matt de la Pena, illustrated by Christian Robinson
  • Greta and the Giants by Zoe Tucker, illustrated by Zoe Persico
  • The Stuff of Stars by Marion Dane Bauer, illustrated by Ekua Holmes
  • Outside In by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Cindy Derby
  • I Talk Like A River by Jordan Scott, illustrated by Sydney Smith
  • Stand Up! Speak Up! By Andrew Joyner
  • Your Place in the Universe by Jason Chin
  • We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, illustrated by Michaela Goade

In PE with Mrs. Nawrocki this week, Grade 5 students showcased some very creative moves as they worked on their dribbling skills.  Very talented!

A big THANK YOU to The Village Griddle!  In response to the Student Council initiative to sponsor a local restaurant during the pandemic, The Village Griddle has given all 4th graders a gift certificate for one free breakfast in the month of March.  This certificate is in appreciation of the support students showed in helping this local business.  Way to Go, Student Council!  Look for the gift certificate in your student's backpack.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

We were just notified by DESE that the MCAS testing window has been delayed.  MCAS testing will now take place for Dale Street students between May 10-June 11.  We will let you know our new testing dates as soon as they are finalized.  Please disregard the MCAS dates included in last week's blog.

Congratulations, Ms. DiPesa!

This week Dale Street Technology Integrationist, Mr. Ahern visited Ms. Plympton's Grade 4 class to talk about digital citizenship.  Students worked through this essential question: How can we be upstanders when we see cyberbullying?  Important and great discussion.  Thanks, Mr. Ahern!

As a reminder, Wednesdays are half-days of in-person learning for alternating cohorts. These days are fully synchronous (with minor exceptions) for the cohort not in-person.  This allows for more in-person learning and students at home still participate in real-time. Click here for a list of the alternating cohort Wednesday schedule through March 24th.  Next week (March 10th) we will have Cohort A in-person.

Dale Street Students - 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • In-Person/Zooms will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m. -  (This includes a mask/snack break and a 15-minute or 30-minute special subject.)
  • Lunch will be from 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Dismissal will begin at 12:30 p.m.
Dale Street families are asked to please pay close attention to the cohort designation each week.  It is important that you update your child’s dismissal for Wednesdays in School Dismissal Manager.   If you need help setting up recurring entries for Wednesday dismissals, please click here for instructions.

On Wednesday afternoon this week, staff members at Dale Street had another opportunity to share their insights/feedback regarding the teaching & learning space design for the Elementary School Project at the Wheelock campus - SO exciting!  If you would like to view the February highlights, please click here.

The Dale Street Math Challenge is on!  Students are free to solve as many problems as they can and will have about a week to turn in their work. Students can hand in a hard copy of the challenge to the office or email it to Mrs. Perachi (bperachi@email.medfield.net) prior to the due date.

More information, including a calendar of important dates and a link to download and print the challenges and solutions, is available here. Questions regarding the math challenge program can be directed to Dale Street math specialist, Mrs. Perachi.

We will be holding virtual parent-teacher conferences on Thursday, March 18th from 12-3:30 p.m., and Tuesday, March 23rd from 12:00-3:30 p.m.  These are early release days and students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m.  Please be sure to update School Dismissal Manager to reflect your child's dismissal plans on these days.

**On Tuesday, March 30th, the Elementary Principals will be holding a webinar to discuss placement procedures for the 2021-2022 school year.  Details to follow.

Check out the PTO update with information about Ribpublic BBQ Fundraiser, open positions, and more!

On a visit to Ms. Isaacson's fourth-grade classroom this week, students were hard at work in social studies.  Students used the computer platform Epic to complete book studies as part of their region projects.  Can't wait to see the finished products!

4th Grade Destination Imagination team members Maddie Abba, Elizabeth Barrette, Katie Dewar, Kacey Herrick, and Lily Maley want to help the Medfield Food Cupboard by making birthday boxes and they’d love your help! Between now and March 15th, they are collecting the following donations:
  • New and/or “like new” children's books
  • $10 gift cards to a local shop
  • Boxes of cake mix and cans of frosting
  • Sprinkles and Birthday Candles
  • Handmade birthday cards
There is a collection box outside of Dale’s main office. Thank you for your support!

On Thursday, Dale Street's MCPE funded HUE document cameras arrived in the mail and they were distributed to teachers today - very exciting!  Thank you to the MCPE board for their continued support and generosity.

Join us! MCPE is looking for new board members-men and women from the Medfield community with various skill sets and interests who want to have a voice in the improvements that reach our classrooms! Board members do not need to have kids currently in the school system—just a desire to support and enrich the Medfield Schools. Board members will serve a 3-year term and attend meetings one evening a month during the school year. The time commitment required to join the Board can be organized to fit the schedules of both stay-at-home and working parents. Interested? We’d love to hear from you! Apply here by March 8th: https://www.medfieldcoalition.org/volunteer-application-form

Feeling stressed, down or anxious? Need to talk to someone about it?  Medfield Outreach is offering drop-in hours.  Check out this flyer for details.

You are invited to join the Medfield Cares About Prevention Community Coalition and help us make change in the Medfield community. To learn more about how to get involved, email Meri Haas at mhaas@medfield.net.

The Medfield Food Cupboard wants to ensure all Medfield residents are aware that their shelves are well-stocked for the winter months and their doors are open to any resident experiencing food shortage.
