October 18, 2019 - Week 8

Greetings Dale Street!

We hope that you had a super week.  Although we only had three and a half days here at #beproudbedale, there was a lot going on.  Please take a minute to see some of the wonderful things that happened this week.

Ms. Sager's fifth grade class started the week by getting outdoors and utilizing our Walking Classrooms.  Students focused on setting and symbolism as they exercised, learned and enjoyed the fresh air.  So cool!

Halloween at Dale Street

The Dale Street staff enjoys making Halloween a safe, exciting, and consistent experience for all students.  On Thursday, October 31st, all of our classrooms:

  • encourage all students to dress up in their costumes.  Please note that students’ faces may not be covered with a mask, hood, or other item. Please do not allow your child to bring fake weapons into school to accompany his/her costume, and particularly violent themes should be avoided.
  • will have Halloween themed activities.  Activities will be teacher-directed and run throughout the day.  The classroom teacher will reach out to head room parents if support is needed.
  • will have a 'Party in a Bag'. Our very generous PTO will provide a brown bag to every student at Dale Street.  These bags will be distributed on Friday, October 25th.  Please have your child decorate (if they wish) or simply print their name on the brown paper bag. Please return the brown bag on October 31st, filled with a few of your child’s favorite food items. Some examples are: juice box or mini water bottle, small salty snack, fun sweet snack (cupcake, cookie), additional items could be a piece of fruit, a small yogurt, or any additional healthy snack.  Adding a little note to your child's bag will definitely make them happy! Students' snack times and the Halloween themed activities will take place at different times depending on each class' schedule.
We understand, and are happy that the children will receive a plethora of treats on Halloween night. Come Friday, November 1st, the staff at Dale Street encourages healthy foods for student snack times to help promote optimal learning.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.

This week, students in Ms. Burnham's fifth grade classroom designed and coded with Mrs. Lowerre in the Makerspace using the application tinkercad.  These young learners are so creative and so amazing!

On Tuesday, Mrs. Scott's fourth grade students had a visit from Dale Street math specialist, Mrs. Perachi for an engaging hands on lesson on the distributive property.  Great collaboration - great fun!

Our first Principal's Coffee will be held on Friday, November 1st.  The topics will include the 2019 MCAS results and helpful hints for parents as student-led Family/Teacher conferences approach.  This Principal's Coffee will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the Dale Street School cafeteria.   Feel free to bring younger children if childcare is an issue.

Please RSVP by Tuesday, October 29th, if you are planning to attend.

Attention 4th Grade Parents!

The Dale PTO is planning a Halloween Kids Night Out on October 25th from 7-8:30. Send your kiddos in costume for a fun night of games, activities, raffles, and a DJ. $15/student payable at the door. Additional information and permission slip can be found here. Interested in volunteering or providing snacks and raffle prizes? View the sign-up genius here

Thank you to Miranda for sharing her book recommendation this week.  Miranda recommended Real Friend by Shannon Hale.  This book inspired her 'because she goes from weird to popular to weird and then to getting the perfect friend.'  Thanks, Miranda!

Check out the PTO update with important information about volunteer opportunities, fundraisers and more. The next PTO meeting is Nov 5 at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, Dr. Marsden, Mr. LaFrancesca, Mr. Brehm, Mr. Quinlan and I visited the MSBA building in Boston for the next phase of the building project.  Architect firms were 'short listed' from 8 to 4.  We will head back in on November 5th to hear from the 4 remaining firms.

Picture retakes will take place on Tuesday, October 22nd.  Students who would like a retake need to return their entire packet on the day of the retake.  Please note that the All-Grade 5 class photo as well individual class photos will be taken on this day.

Check out the excitement....one of Mr. Mason's Grade 5 students received a response from the letter he recently sent out.  Stephen King’s assistant was the first 'famous' person to reply.  Stay tuned!

Attention Band Parents! We're excited to share that we will be having our first ever "Students as Teachers" Night on November 5 at 7:00 PM at the high school. The evening will begin in the auditorium.

During the event, one parent from each family will have the opportunity to be taught by their son/daughter how to play a song on the same instrument they are currently learning in school and perform together as a band at the end of the night! Parents will be given their own instrument to use on the night of the event courtesy of our instrument vendor, Music & Arts. All parents are invited to attend, but only one parent from each family will get to be the student for the night.

We need parents to sign-up so that we can provide Music & Arts with an accurate count of instruments to bring. Please complete this Google form by end of day Friday, October 18.

Today, students in Ms. McKenzie's fifth grade class participated in math workshop.  Students loved the freedom to circulate through different stations....especially the one with their teacher!

The Dale Street Student Council representatives (with input from their classmates) have voted to collect mittens, hats, gloves and scarves to keep homeless adults warm this winter.  There will be collection bins at Dale Street from November 12th - November 22nd to collect donated items.

Our next Spirit Day will be on Friday, November 22nd with the theme.....COMFY DAY!!

 SAVE THE DATE!

Our 4th Annual Family Literacy Night is coming!
