October 11, 2019 - Week 7

Hi Dale Street!

It's hard to believe that we are just about halfway through October already. The first two weeks of October have started off wonderfully!  It is so great to see all of the learning that is taking place, but all of the awesome smiles that go along with the learning......priceless!  Music, SEL lessons, Makerspace and Intramurals are all up and running.  Take a peek and see some of the great things that happened this week at #beproudbedale.
Congratulations to our Positive Referrals this week.  Thank you for making our school such a great place!  We are very proud of you!

We greatly appreciate all the work that room parents put in each year to help our teachers and make the holiday celebrations fun and inclusive! This year we are kicking off our first school celebration allowing kids to have a celebration with food they love and remain in an allergy safe environment!

How does it work?

Our very generous PTO will provide a brown bag to every student at Dale Street.  These bags will be distributed on Friday, October 25th.  Please have your child decorate (if they wish) or simply print their name on the brown paper bag.

Please return the brown bag on October 31st, filled with a few of your child’s favorite food items. Some examples are: juice box or mini water bottle, small salty snack, fun sweet snack (cupcake, cookie), additional items could be a piece of fruit, a small yogurt, or any additional healthy snack.  Adding a little note to your child's bag will definitely make them happy!

This fun bag will be eaten during snack time on 10/31 in your child's classroom. Our hope is that this new format provides a safe environment for all of our students, removes the food responsibility from the room parents and gives control over what the kids eat to each individual parent. Due to food allergies, classes will eat their “Party in A Bag” following snack protocols in the classroom (i.e. no sharing food).

Room parents will continue to plan the great celebration activities and crafts that they always have! We hope your children enjoy this fun new celebration idea.
Attention 4th Grade Parents!

The Dale PTO is planning a Halloween Kids Night Out on October 25th from 7-8:30. Send your kiddos in costume for a fun night of games, activities, raffles, and a DJ. $15/student payable at the door. Additional information and permission slip can be found here. Interested in volunteering or providing snacks and raffle prizes? View the sign-up genius here

Ms. Isaacson's fourth grade students dove into their Soils, Rocks, and Landforms FOSS unit this week to observe various soils and predict where they might find each type. #continuousgrowth

Our Grade 5 classes began their second unit in the SEL Sanford Harmony program.  Their focus for this unit is Empathy and Critical Thinking and the goals of this unit are: develop empathy, focus on positive changes in oneself and others, reduce stereotyped thinking, become aware of how thoughts influence thinking and behaviors, develop the tools to change one's own thoughts, interact with one another in more positive ways.

Here are the family letter and the activities letter for you to view.

Attention Band Parents! We're excited to share that we will be having our first ever "Students as Teachers" Night on November 5 at 7:00 PM at the high school. The evening will begin in the auditorium.

During the event, one parent from each family will have the opportunity to be taught by their son/daughter how to play a song on the same instrument they are currently learning in school and perform together as a band at the end of the night! Parents will be given their own instrument to use on the night of the event courtesy of our instrument vendor, Music & Arts. All parents are invited to attend, but only one parent from each family will get to be the student for the night.

We need parents to sign-up so that we can provide Music & Arts with an accurate count of instruments to bring. Please complete the Google form linked below by next Friday, October 18.

Grade 4 students wrapped up their 'things that move" sessions with Mrs. Lowerre in the Makerspace this week.  Check out some of the amazing ideas that our fabulous students came up with........

We are very excited that all 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to complete biweekly math challenges. Math challenges will be available to print at home from the website linked below.

Students will be free to solve as many problems as they can and will have about a week to turn in their work. We hope that all students and families find these problems to be a challenging and fun activity.

More information, including a calendar of important dates and a link to download and print the challenges and solutions, is available at https://www.mathinaction.org/dale-st-school.html. Questions regarding the math challenge program can be directed to Dale Street math specialist, Mrs. Perachi.

The next challenge is due by October 24th.

On Thursday, students in Ms. Condon's Grade 5 class analyzed picture books to work on the elements of a story arc.  #collaboration

Students in Ms. Bertschmann's fifth grade class used "and then" story cards to work on narrative endings.  Great writing practice and great discussions!
